Joe Smith is quite low on the list of players I'd want to Bulls to trade. He is going to be useful and his contract is nice.
If there was a trade though, maybe combining him with Duhon for a 2/3, but theres other players I'd look to trade first, like Nocioni.

I think Joe Smith is only available as contract filler in a deal for a star player.
I don't think they have much motivation to move him otherwise.

I wouldn't mind if he were traded at all...frees up a lot of PF minutes for our youngsters. Then again, he's not bad to have around for the reasons outlined by Haley.

I'd trade him easily. It frees up minutes. As long as we get back an expiring/rookie contract/pick.

Joe isn't available right now. Can I take a message?

Players I'd deal before Joe Smith:
Nocioni
Wallace
Duhon
Thabo
Players definitely below him:
Deng
Gordon
Noah
Thomas
Players on about the same level:
Gray
Hinrich
Irrelevant Guys (because they aren't in the rotation or close to being so:
Curry
Griffin
Nichols
Krhyapa
All of that depends on the deal obviously.
You obviously had something in mind by asking though. Who are you looking to deal?

The thing is, what are you going to get back for him?
A Veteran better than Joe? Obviously not.
A Young player with real upside. No.
A young player with a small chance of upside. Maybe, but he wouldn't develop in Chicago as we're currently run.
A pick? Probably 2nd rounders is all you could hope for, and we'd have no time to develop them if we had them.

I'd take him for an expiring that is somehow serviceable...like a Jason Williams, or Kurt Thomas. These aren't proposals, just examples. I would take a limited upside young player. If he's in the backcourt, he's likely got a shot next year. Duhon's probably gone, and Thabo and JamesOn will likely still suck. 2nd rounders, depending on the team, would be nice. Get a Euro prospect and let him play, or use it as an asset in a trade.
Joe Smith is fine and all, but with possible luxtax implications, I don't want the bulls to have any excuse not to resign BG and LD.
Getting rid of Smith may, and I stress may, allow us to resign Duhon.

Joe is a player who can be packaged in a big trade to take off the burden of a team trading a bigtime low post player.
I like Joe and hope he ends his contract in Chicago unless we get a starting big man in a trade.
Joe is doing a good job starting and is an excellent backup PF/C for us.

sure would be nice to have one less front court player (someone...) so that TT/Noah/Gray (yes, Gray) could get consistent rotation minutes. With that being said, Joe Smith is EVERYTHING he was advertized to be, and I was a big fan of bringing him in when the FA lists were first rolled out.
