Taking the place of a famous dad is equal parts good fortune and teetering high-wire act. Nobody knows that conundrum better than Joey Meyer. He led the DePaul Blue Demons to 231 wins between 1984 and 1997, before a disastrous 3-23 season led to his dismissal. The younger Meyer had six 20-win seasons, seven NCAA appearances, and was named NCAA coach of the year in 1987, but he could never truly take the place of the legendary Ray Meyer, who notched his first win against Navy Pier in 1942 and kept going until he had 724 victories, two final fours, and an NIT championship to show for it all. The younger Meyer is now head coach and GM of the Tulsa 66ers of the NBA

I loved Ray Meyer although I only ever met him once at a Northwestern-DePaul basketball game where I just had time to shout, "tell Joey to make 'em work on their free throws. Their FREE THROWS...!"
Liked Joey Meyer very much, too. In fact, my younger brother and I used to be pretty much obsessed with DePaul basketball.
I was a huge Chuck Swirsky fan when he used to do radio broadcasts in Chicago as well.
Just to give you a little bit of insight into my psyche...

I loved Depaul hoops growing up. those heartbreaking years when they were #1 going into the tournament and get upset in the 1st round 3 times in a row! Oh, and that game in the tourney vs. st johns (1987?) when billy packer and musburger are rooting for the "johnnies" on their comeback... billy packer even shouts "oh no" when the johnies get called for a crucial foul.... then Dallas Comegies goes to the line for an and 1 with under a minute remaining. down 2. he misses on purpose and Strickland gets the ball. He slithers in for a fingeroll and brent and billy are heartbroken. the Demons go on to win in OT and get to the sweet 16. I got excited just typing this recap. And have hated billy packer ever since.

I had you until Chuck, or I had you in agreement once I mentioned Chuck, or what? When the Swirsk is involved it's hard to be sure of others' reactions.
I really did like him, though. Knowledgeable, geeky, decent and charitable but also excitable and irascible. A winning combination in my book.
