So I have a question for the music enthusiasts out there. What is the best place in Chicago to find vinyl records. I am looking for stuff from the 70's - mostly punk - but I have pretty varied taste.


I know that there are a few DJ's hanging out on these boards - do you still trade in Vinyl? And if so, what are a couple of good spots to pick up some classics?


If I was still living in Austin, I'd just run to Waterloo records - so where should I run to in Chicago?

Here's a good link for record shops in Chicago

their not going to have any punk vinyl's but if your ever looking for electronic or house music go to gramaphone records it's basically were house music got started in the u.s. sneak, derrick carter roger sanchez all have worked there at one time or another.

Wax Trax is a good place for punk. My suggestion is Vintage Vinyl in Evanston. Very eclectic. Or it least it used to be. I practically lived there when I was in college.

Second Hand Tunes has closed a lot of their locationc, but I think the one in Evanston and the one on Clark in Chicago is still open. Bigger selection, but more mainstream.

If you are not hung up on vinyl, Chicago Digital on Oak Park Ave in Oak Park is fantastic. Lots of hard to find and bootleg stuff in all genres.

I only buy Vinyl and mostlyt shop at reckless (both locations but the Wicker smack one is a lot bigger). Although their punk selection is small compared to the other sections they probably have a few hundred punk records. I dont know what your into, but I see a lot of Fugazi, Decendants/ALL, Sex Pistol reissues in there.

I also like Hard Boiled at Roscoe and Damen. The owner/lone worker is a real music junky. He actually got me into some great Electronic like Kompakt and DFA.

I am really excited about heading south and checking this place out.

Reckless is only 5 stops down the blue line from me - I am going to go check them out.

not punk but funk check out http://www.dustygroove.com/ on Ashland and Division.

Reckless is good, you might find some cool stuff at Val's Halla in Oak Park too. I haven't been there since she moved, but she knew her stuff and seemed to have a nice selection- check it out.

Also try Dave's Record's on Clark, Permanent Records, and Hyde Park Records.
