The search for the next Bulls head coaching job [Redux]

We need to get this topic heated up again. I have seen enough for Boylan to be quite honest. Sure, he hasn't had a training camp to fully implement his own style of play towards the team but i think he has taken too much of a relax approach just to appease the players. I think he realized to get into the good graces of his players, he needed to be the opposite of Skiles in terms of his assertive and somewhat aggressive approach and sterness towards his players by being more of a players coach and to put it simply, by being more "soft". I think thats part of the reason why there seems to be even more turmoil within the team then there ever has been, because they know that Boylan just won't do anything about it anymore.

And i don't even need to get into the actual "coaching" aspect of Boylan, and his decisions to play the veterans to ride the ship back in order was one thing, but to continue the ship towards a rumbling waterfall is another. Im not sure what he and the coaching staff is seeing, but these players need to hear a different voice. They arn't listening anymore, there is seems to be a lack respect. We are still a relatively a young team, we need a coach that commands respect by our players, and who can restore order within our playeres.

Let our coaching search continue. The headcoach, assistants, everyone. We need an overhaul..

I agree. Lets just throw out names in list format and compile a master list. If we get enough participation, maybe I could sticky it.

Be inclusive with your list, but only list those you would actually advocate get consideration (not necessarily the job, but those you want the organization to take a look at/contact/interview).

Here I go (off the top of my head):

Del Harris
Duane Casey
Coach K
Lorenzo Romar
Tom Creane
Tom Izzo

I'd really like to see the Bulls go with an NBA assistant, or a college head coach. I don't want a retread.

My choices:

Coach K
Tom Izzo
Tom Thibodeaux
Mario Ellie
Terry Porter

Dream Choices(but unlikely)

Coach K. Who wouldn't want him?

Sloan. He played for Chicago. He is probably the most under-rated coach ever. But he won't leave Utah at his age..

Rudy Tomjanovich. Again, very unlikely. Health issues, and his last try as a head coach for the Lakers ended dreadfully.

Possible Choices.

Rick Carlisle. He is one of the most deliberate coaches as they get. He likes to control every aspect of the offense and defense, thus the games a very slow paced. But he has the respect of his peers, which must say something about him. Im not sold on him, but i don't think id be too upset if we signed him either.

Mike Fratello. Again, a slow paced coach who has a deliberate coaching method and style. But his time may be passed, as even coaches pass their time.

Paul Silas. Same as Fratello, he could be past his time. But considering our best young talents are big men, he could be an excellent coach to mentor and teach them to be great. Id only hire him if we had an excellent assistants along side him though.

Dwane Casey. I dont think he got a fair shake with the Wolves, and he may do better with the Bulls.

Assistants.

A.D. Im sorry, but i love this guy. He loved him when he was for the Bulls. He was a big man, that he is smart, articulate and he is a leader. He could mentor our young big men, and teach them smarts, toughness, and tough defense.

Scottie Pippen. He was a great player and all, but i would never trust him as a head coach considering he has NO coaching experience at all.

Who i don't want.

Larry Brown. He is definitly past his time. He has a huge ego, he costs a fortune and he is unlikely to stay with the team beyond his own interests. He is still a great basketball mind, noone is doubting that. But he is past his time as a head coach in the NBA, and he is most definitly not worth the pay cheque he would desire and the troubles he would bring.

I wouldn't mind Paul Westphal and I love the idea of AD as an assistant. I think our chemistry hasn't been quite the same since he left.

Me. I think he's the most overrated coach in basketball.

I would not mind Larry Brown at all if the company was willing to pay for him. So he didn't do anything in New York. Big whoop. Phil Jackson couldn't win anything with that hand. I think he'd handle Noah the best of all the possible choices, actually.

I don't want any college coaches, period. Izzo, Donovan, Shhh-shef-ski, I don't want any of them.

You mean Crean? Nope, don't want him either. If they haven't played, assisted or coached in any professional league whatsoever, I don't want them.

I'll have to think about names.

I don't really want a college coach. As for retreads, maybe a current NBA assistant would work.

However, I would like a coach that will develop the young team and play at a fast pace (run forrest run!). That's not most of the retread names, I realize. If that's a college coach, so be it.

So I guess I would say, a college coach would not be my first choice, but given my limited criteria, a college coach might the person who fits that bill.

P.S. Edit - This hire to me does not have to the guy that coaches for the next ten years. Skiles was a great hire, and 4-5 years is a long time in NBA coaching terms. I'm fine with that.

What about Lorenzo Romar?

Edit: He played in the NBA, which ruins my little game. I was just going to keep re-asking the same question to you over and over with a different college coach's name at the end of the sentence ("What about Bruce Webber?"). Oh well.

So, since he played in the NBA, what about Lorenzo Romar? :D

I like the IDEA of Coach K, but I don't think his coaching style will translate to the NBA game at all. He would have been a great coach for us to have 4 years ago with all our young guys, but I think he'd hit a similar wall that Skiles did. Just like running them til they drop, getting them to buy into the feel good team focused attitude would wear on them also.

Nope, no college coaches, even if they've played in the NBA.

FWIW, I really like Bruce Weber – he seems the least, I don't know…college-y of the top college coaches. He can't recruit for sh*t but he still wins lots of games. I'd want him to prove himself as an assistant first, though.

Also, he's a helluva photographer.

Skiles got more out of Duhon than Coach K did.

I would like to see Casey get a shot here. I don't want an older, short term retread or a "slow down" coach. Neither make sense imo.

I agree with tong po.

It seems like most college -> pros coaches are busts in the NBA and NFL. I think the reason is primarily that college is a talent > scheme type of system. The great college coaches are typically great recruiters and simply go to battle with better players more times than not.

I would be nervous even if we could have coach K who seems like a god among college coaches.

If I were going to go with a college coach, I would consider trying to get Billy Donovan. Maybe he's more willing to leave Florida with a Gator on the Bulls roster, but it seems unlikely given that his proximity to his family seemed like such a huge factor and I doubt he wants to move them from Florida to Chicago.

How about George Karl at the end of the year if Denver lets him go? Another 1st round playoff loss, and I think Denver would have to at least consider it. He's fast paced, has done well in pretty much all of his stops considering the talent he's had to work with, and isn't a slow down the game type.

The only reason to try coach K would be that he would be a F/A magnet. So many guys in the NBA get a hard-on for this guy because of his mystique.
