The Phillie Phanatic will turn 30 on April 25, but there's still a lot of little kid in the playful, lovable 300-pound green furry creature from the Galapagos Islands who's the Phillies' biggest fan.
Apparently, the Phanatic has had a growing fan base of his own over the past 29 years, and the Phillies mascot reached a special milestone this week, when he was named as the top mascot in sports, according to a market research group whose findings were reported Wednesday on Forbes.com.

The Phanatic edged out a mascot legend in the San Diego Chicken for the No. 1 spot on The Marketing Arm's Davie-Brown Index. The Phanatic's antics have both entertained and enthralled young fans since he debuted in 1978.

Forbes.com noted that the top mascots in sports have appeal to young fans. It's that appeal that forms the foundation of kids growing more attracted to a respective sport. The Davie-Brown Index is used by marketers to determine a celebrity's (or mascot's) brand identity. Scores are determined by calculating consumer responses on eight attributes: appeal, aspiration, awareness, endorsement, influence, notice, trendsetter and trust.

The mascots ranking No. 3 through 10 were: Mr. Met (New York Mets), the Racing Sausages (Milwaukee Brewers), Benny the Bull (Chicago Bulls), the Rally Monkey (Los Angeles Angels), Sourdough Sam (San Francisco 49ers), Rowdy (Dallas Cowboys), Rally (Atlanta Braves) and Miles (Denver Broncos).

behind the Racing Sausages! Rare air for Benny

San Diego Chicken is a real jerk. I've read that he has injured players by tackling them when they didnt expect it. A total jerk.

That chicken, he's a menace he is.

Not to mention the fact that he eats babies.

Well at least somebody is representing, it's nice to have a little success somewhere in the organization, be it the players or the freakin' mascot.

And this San Diego Chicken character sounds like my kind of mascot, somebody needs to do the dirty work. :P

BREAKING NEWS: Benny the Bull Arrested

Image

Benny the Bull was just arrested after a run-in with Chicago Police in Millennium Park. He has been booked on charges of public urination and resisting arrest.

Peter Frances Geraci, who is spearheading Benny's legal defense, is expected to argue against the validity of charging a non-human with public urination, as animals commonly urinate outdoors. Geraci also claims that Mr. Bull was not avoiding the police by running in the opposite direction, but instead was following his instincts by charging after a man wearing a red winter parka.

Well, looks like Benny better enjoy his fifth spot while it lasts because he is bound to suffer a bit of a public backlash after this. Meanwhile the Bulls nightmare season continues to get weirder.

Why does it seem to me that no one really noticed that? Or cared. It wasn't really mentioned. He went on Tyson Chandler's summer weight gain diet and actually lost weight.

A full-fledged bull costume donning a Chicago Bulls jersey and shorts, Benny, born almost 40 years ago, is a pioneer for a growing legion of NBA mascots who entertain fans during breaks in the action with stunts and dances. Like many team mascots, he helps promote the team at off-site appearances like private parties, charity events, and picking fights with off duty police officers.

This is the best mascot imo.

The new Benny is like Da Bull. He is actually athletic and dunks off trampolines and shoots backwards half court shots.
