OT: J. O'Neal May Sit Out Rest of Season

Post#1 » by girlygirl » Mon Jan 21, 2008 4:59 pm

Evidently his knee is really giving him problems, although he claims he oesn't need more surgery.

Some on this board have pushed to trade for O'Neal. But the guy is breaking down at the relatively young age of 29. He hasn't been fully healthy in several years. Who knows if he'll be forced to retire in another year or two because of all these injuries? He talks about how many pain pill he has to take just to be able to play -- and how that led him to take a test to make sure all the medication hasn't damaged his liver! It's sad.

Anyway, this is why I'm usually very hesitant to support proposed trades for players like O'Neal or McGrady -- they simply can't stay healthy. What good is having a star on your team if they are apt to miss 25+ games every season?

Anyway, hopefully Jermaine will do what's best for him and his future health, even if that means walking away from the game before he might want to. He talks about wanting to be able to play with his kids -- and in the end, that should be more important than anything else...

This is why I favour the years-played metric instead. Jermaine is now into his twelfth. That's a lot.

Cliff Levingston has never really been in full support of grabbing O'Neal. He's a pretty low efficiency offensive player for his stature and position, but he's a beast defensively... as you say though... when he's healthy.

His amazingly massive deal doesn't help the situation either.

Ditto! I never understood why some of our own Bulls posters wanted to trade for him. INLKO, he never struck me as being a tough PF, yet taking all those Js. Should serve notice to those who had him on their PF list to finally scratch him off, once & for all.

All this story means to me is that it is now theoretically easier for the Bulls to make the playoffs.

I'm not interested in JO at all anymore.

i'm actually one that still wants him. Of course..i only want him if wallace was leaving in the trade. The way I see it..wallace is done..or almost done..as is O'Neal..but O'Neal gives us the better shot at doing something big soon. Also O'neals contract isn't for that many more years than wallace is it? The window is closing for both of them but I just think O'Neal if he could just be healthy for the playoffs would fit this team very well.

I can't say it enough though...i would only want him for wallace and filler to make the trade work. I wouldn't be willing to trade anything of actual substance for him.

He barely played his first four years, though. He would've played more minutes if he had gone to college.

He's really only had five full seasons in his prime, and in only one of those did he play 80 games. Even Grant Hill got six in before he was done.

Jermaine O'Neal, Ron Artest, Jamaal Tinsley, Jonathan Bender…Larry Bird and Donnie Walsh sure love players who can't play a whole season.

To me O'Neal is the softest player in the NBA . He needs to drink some tough juice

Sorry CL, I wasn't trying to steal it. I just thought I didn't see an ICLO in your post, I thought I'd just throw something out there. My bad. :)

It's not just about the minutes. Even if they are bit part players, it's 4 full seasons of NBA calibre workouts and practices, plus all the travelling, and all them nightclubs that need standing around in. These things add up.
