OT: Bernie Mac dies at the age of 50

Post#1 » by TeK » Sat Aug 9, 2008 2:03 pm

Wow what a sad day for Chicago, and certaintly for the world fo comedy!

I LOVED Bernie's comedy!

http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/Movies/ ... index.html

(CNN) -- Comic actor Bernie Mac died early Saturday of complications from pneumonia, according to a family member and his publicist. He was 50.

Bernie Mac, 50, had been hospitalized in his hometown, Chicago, with pneumonia.

He had been hospitalized in Chicago, Illinois, for more than a week with the lung infection.

Danica Smith, the comedian's publicist, had said Thursday that Mac's condition was "stable," The Associated Press reported.

"When I got the call this morning, it was just devastating news," said Chicago Sun-Times columnist Stella Foster. "Let's face it: Bernie Mac was one of a kind. He was the best of the best in terms of giving you a good laugh."

Smith previously said the pneumonia wasn't related to sarcoidosis, a lung disease Mac had, which had been in remission since 2005, according to AP.

Mac caused a stir in July with some jokes he made during a fundraiser for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, AP reported.

Mac -- born Bernard Jeffrey McCollough -- starred in the Fox television series "The Bernie Mac Show." His film roles included the "Ocean's Eleven" series, "Friday," "Get on the Bus," "Transformers" and "Bad Santa."

A sad day indeed. Very shocking this morning. I hope people remember him for his great work and not his controversial remarks. May he rest in peace.

My day is officially f***ed up now. Jeez. R.I.P. Bernie Mac. Him and Robin Harris were Chicago comedy legends.

It's crazy because he just seemed so young still.

Bernie Mac was a funny mother f_____. This is truly a sad day for the comedy scene.

I may have to go watch Bad Santa as a tribute.

I'm shocked and saddened. Who the heck dies of pneumonia these days except for really old people whose systems are weak or people who refuse medical treatment b/c of religious reasons? Seems like a horrible waste.

My tribute won't be watching a movie of his but rather the Bernie Mac show. I have some of those on disk somewhere. I thought it was a terrific and under-appreciated sitcom.

He was a great story teller. I had his book on tape w/ him retelling events in his life that were too funny and relevant. One of Chi-Town's finest and one of my favorite entertainers. Peace be with you Bernie, and prayers to the Mac family and friends.
