WASHINGTON -- Shortstop Alex Gonzalez, who has been attending to his son's illness since mid-July, rejoined the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday for the start of a series against the Washington Nationals.
Gonzalez went on bereavement leave on July 14 and later was transferred to the restricted list.
Cincinnati put infielder Juan Castro back on the 15-day disabled list to open a roster spot. Castro has a partially torn ligament in his right elbow and expects to have reconstructive surgery. Last week, he agreed to come off the disabled list until Gonzalez returned.
The Reds also recalled right-hander Elizardo Ramirez from Triple-A Louisville to take the roster spot of right-hander Kyle Lohse, who was traded to Philadelphia on Monday for a prospect.
Ramirez developed tendinitis in his pitching shoulder and opened the season on the disabled list. He went to Louisville when his shoulder improved and was 2-2 with a 2.88 ERA in nine starts.
In other moves, the Reds selected infielder Mark Bellhorn's contract from Louisville and outrighted catcher Chad Moeller to the Triple-A club.
The Reds signed Bellhorn to a minor league contract in January. He hit .243 with 18 doubles, 11 homers and 53 RBIs in 88 games at Louisville.
Moeller was hitting .167 in three stints with the Reds.
