Do we have a slight chance at Peavy?

Post#1 » by RustInPeace » Sun Apr 12, 2009 6:27 pm

Would a package of Verlander + some hitting spects be enticing enough for San Diego to accept? I don't know any other clubs that are really targeting him (except the Mets) and I don't know who they're willing to give up.

And as a tigers fan, assuming Verlander returns to '06-'07 form or close to it, would you give him up along with the last of our better prospect (except Porcello of course :D ) for a chance at Peavy?

But didn't Peavy say he wants to go to an NL team? Or is that someone else? If it is, then tell me before I fantasize too much

Peavy either said he wanted to stay in the National League or that he wanted to stay on the West coast (I don't really remember which, but neither bodes well).

If he really must be traded I'd like it to be to the Tigers (it would kill me to see one of my favorite players playing for the Mets, or even the Cubs, for that matter). I kind of doubt the Tigers would give up Verlander if he was pitching well. I love the Padres, but they're pretty hopeless right now regardless. :(

Generally speaking, while its possible we (the Tigers) don't have a firesale, I think that theres basically no chance we find ourselves as buyers at the deadline.

I guess my answer is no. Sorry. Guess I'm just in the mood to shatter dreams today. :(

Figured it was best to nip this one in the bud before it gets out of control.

I doubt the Tigers go after Peavy. They are looking to shed salary and unless the Tigers can move other bigger contracts for prospects first (which I don't see happening), I surely don't see them moving Verlander of all people who is still on a small contract, even for Peavy.

To be honest, I know we played god awful last year, but I'd like to give this current team time to play and see how they do before DD makes any moves. There are some good signs this year with the direction of the team. Who knows, maybe Verlander returns to form. Gotta see what we have first.

Looks like the Padres are trying to send him to the White Sox, and he's likely going to veto it.

That should tell us all we need to know with regards to any possibility the Tigers had of getting him.

Well I wasn't too interested in Peavy on his contract. He is a nice pitcher, but I like our young guys. Once we get a few more looks at Dontrelle and get Bondo back, I think the Tigers will have the best young pitching rotation in baseball.

Now, if we could get a solid reliever, I'm all for it. but another starting pitcher is not what this team needs.

Glad he will veto going to Chicago.

^It definitely looks like starting pitching isn't the most urgent need our team has right now, but I obviously don't want him to go to a division rival.

They said he'd veto it, but could ultimately accept a deal to an AL team if the Padres can't swing a deal with an NL team. Such a stance makes no sense to me. If he'll eventually accept going to the Sox, what incentive do the Padres have to seek out a deal with a team they'll have to face now and again?

I'm a bit confused ATM, but hopefully the end result is Peavy staying away from the AL central.

Well according to the scroll on ESPN tonight, Peavy vetoed the deal, it's dead. I don't see him going to a division rival. KC has a great pitching staff. I don't see the Twins or Indians making a deal with the Padres. Chicago probably has the worst pitching staff in the division, but Peavy doesn't want to go to an A.L. team apparently. He wanted to go to the Cubs, but not the White Sox. So the location, market, and money (already locked inro a contract) weren't an issue... the only issue had to be the team itself which is in the American League.

I definitely expect the Sox to make a big move to get pitchers though. Nothing we can do about it, besides work our own pitching kinks out and gain a sizable lead in the division.
