'good-bye' to pitcher Dontrelle Willis

Post#1 » by kellmellus50 » Mon May 31, 2010 12:17 am

The Tigers cut loose left-hander Dontrelle Willis tonight, halting after two years and two months his largely fruitless career with the club.
Willis was designated for assignment to make room for right-hander Max Scherzer, who returns from the minors Sunday and rejoins the rotation. With Willis’ departure, right-hander Amradno Galarraga stays with the club and assumes Willis’ rotation spot. Despite playing in a park that favors left-handed pitching, the Tigers have returned to an all right-handed rotation.

The Diamondbacks have spoken with the Detroit Tigers about acquiring pitcher Dontrelle Willis, the once-dominant lefty who was designated for assignment on Sunday. Willis had a 4.98 ERA in nine games (eight starts) for the Tigers but was bumped from the rotation to make room for former Diamondbacks right-hander Max Scherzer, whom the Tigers recalled from the minor leagues to start on Sunday. The Tigers, who will be on the hook for nearly all of his $12 million salary, have until June 9 to either trade or release Willis or place him on waivers.

Anything we can get for Willis would be nice. Most likely, he's just going to clear waivers and become a FA.

If the Tigers can trade him, it will most likely be like how we traded Nate. Pay his salary and a get project minor leaguer. I'd say its possible. I never really thought we should of got Dontrelle in the 1st place, but thats water under the bridge now.

The Tigers traded Willis to Arizona tonight for right-handed starter Billy Buckner, who was sent to Triple-A Toledo.
Buckner was a second-round pick of the Royals in 2004. In three starts this year with Arizona, he’s 0-3 with a 11.08 ERA. For his big-league career, he’s 6-for-21 in quality starts. His overall big-league numbers (including relief work) are 6-11 with a 6.25 ERA

Hes a guy who can at least fill a spot in the minors. better than losing him for nothing.

Goodbye Dontrelle. Your humorously bad control issues will be missed

Buckner, who is not related to ex-major leaguer Bill Buckner, .

He opened the season 3-1 with a 3.53 ERA in seven starts with Triple-A Reno.

"He gives us some protection as both a starter and reliever," Dombrowski said

Willis pitched six scoreless innings and scored a run on a headfirst slide in his Arizona debut on Saturday night and the Diamondbacks held on for a 4-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies.

"So far, so good," he said.

The big left-hander, acquired Tuesday from Detroit, gave up five hits, walked four and hit a batter, but the Rockies were 0-for-10 against him with runners in scoring position. When the Rockies hit the ball hard, and they did a number of times, it was either right at a defender or someone made a standout defensive play.

Willis is 1-0 in his two starts with Arizona. In those two games, opponents are 1-for-19 against him with runners in scoring position.
