We've already seen a few heads fly in recent months, starting with Renteria and continuing with Sheffield and (possibly) Nate.
Given the team's financial state (massive payroll) and our status as non-contenders, the possibility must be considered that more people are gone soon. Frankly, unless this season gets off to a rip-rouring start, we fit the textbook example of a deadline seller.
What would you say the odds are that the following major players are gone by the deadline? For the ones that are most likely to be traded, what kind of return can be expected? How much salary would we have to eat?
Cabrera
Willis
Robertson
Guillen
Maggs
Polanco
Inge
Bonderman
I left out Granderson and Verlander because they are relatively cheap this year and probably safe regardless.

Re: Who's still on the team after the trade deadline?
I think Cabrera is safe, we gave up too much talent to let him go for a salary dump, even if we get good talent in return, he's young and will only get better.
As you put it, Verlander & Granderson are most likely safe, regardless how the season plays out.
As for the rest of the players listed, I don't believe any are safe if we continue to be non-contenders, I think Maggs and Inge would be most likely traded, strictly because Maggs is a talented player who could help a team out now and would draw interest and we would save money, for Inge, he also get's a lot of interest because of his versatility he'd get a lot of interest from the National League. I doubt anyone wants to take on Willis and his contract with the way he's collapsed, Robertson could go, I doubt he'd get tons of interest and I'd had to see Guillen gone, I like him as a player and as a person.

Bonderman, Robertson, Thames (Maybe).
Hopefully "Tigers-Peavy-random number" will be here sooner or later.

^The Padres are my other team.
Hands off!
Actually, if the prognostications are true that he'll be out of SD by the deadline, him coming here would be a dream compared to the other possibilities.

I don't see Dontrelle going anywhere. Not because the Tigers wouldn't trade him, but because I doubt there is a team out there that would pay his salary for all the issues he's dealing with.
Magglio, Guillen, Robertson and maybe even Bonderman could all be traded. Bonderman and Robertson aren't the pitchers they were 2-3 years ago, but someone would take a chance on them. We wouldn't get top value back though.
Cabrera is off limits.

Re: Who's still on the team after the trade deadline?
Yeah, I figured I'd put in my own opinions after a few people chimed in with there opinions, because I wanted to see what people's initial responses were without my OP influencing what people write.
Dontrelle is not moveable at this point unless he can show some sort of sign that he'll be a good pitcher again (which I don't see happening at all). I'd LOVE to see us get rid of him, as that contract represents a frankly embarrassing mistake on the part of the organization.
Robertson could be traded simply by virtue of the fact that he doesn't appear happy here. Given Bonderman's injury issues, I'd say that trading him is a lousy idea. His value is pretty low at this point and he still has some abilities left. I'd rather see how he recovers then trade him with his value at this stage. Perhaps the organization disagrees.
Maggs and Guillen are by far the most likely to be dealt if we find ourselves in a sellers situation this year. Both will probably produce more or less to the levels they have in the past, and playoff contending teams looking for a bat (particularly AL teams) would definitely be interested in either. I think Polanco could also be placed in this category, but perhaps less likely to be moved given his fairly low salary compared to the former two players.
I'd like to proclaim Cabrera to be off limits as well, and he probably is due to the number of years we've contributed to the guy, but I actually think that this team could get desperate enough to save money to comtemplate such a move. A separate issue would obviously be who would be willing to take on the kind of contract we handed him, but I don't think he's as "unmovable" as we'd all like to think.
I'd say Verlander, Granderson, and the rest of our "lower salary" guys are locks to still be on the team, along with Dontrelle (who won't be on the roster but still on the payroll) and Bonderman. I'd also say that its ALMOST certain Cabrera is still in Motown. Anybody else could be gone, but of course not all of previously mentioned players will be gone.

Re: Who's still on the team after the trade deadline?
what do you think the chances are of us pulling a big one come trade deadline time? do we even have enough talent in the minor leagues any more after giving them all away for willis and cabrera?
i'd like to see us pull in a "soriano" type player.

Re: Who's still on the team after the trade deadline?
^We'd all like to see that, but the fact is that the Tigers spent a TON of money two offseasons ago and it hasn't worked out.
Now we've got one of the highest payrolls and not much to show for it in terms of product on the fields. Its really unlikely we'll be making any trades to ADD high priced talent (I'd be very shocked).
