Tigers Draft
The draft is tonite. We have a high pick, 9 or 10 i think, thanks to last seasons debacle.
But, this means we have the potential to get a very, very good young player. I gotta say we could use a player at just about any position. I would love a speedy outfielder, a middle-infielder or a pitcher. And if a really good catcher was there, for sure.
Discuss our picks here.

Re: Tigers Draft
Well I think we need infielders. We have young outfielders both with the team and in the minors. But Polanco is getting old and Inge won't last forever. We got Cabrera for the next 6 years at 1st base and maybe Larish will get it together to play third, but we need a good young 2B and SS.
Pitchers are always welcome. We've seen what young guys like Verlander, Porcello, Edwin, Perry, Zumaya can bring to a ballclub.
As you said, a catcher or two would be nice.
I can't wait to see what DD does in the draft. it's time to rebuild the farm.

Re: Tigers Draft
There are 5 pitchers that could go from 4 to 12 in the draft that I have heard the Tigers have interest in.
1. Tyler Matzek LHP 6'3" 185lb- high schooler. Very polished. 4 pich mix. Throws 90-93 consistently. Has above average command of his pitches. Supposedly, he might want a high signing bonus which could drop him some. If he's available @ 9, I don't see anyway the tigers pass him up.
2. Jacob Turner RHP 6'5" 210lbs - A top prep player. Has a consistent 94-96 mph velocity, can turn it up to 98 on his fastball sinker. Doesn't have good command of secondary pitches.
3. Mike Leake RHP 6'0" 180lbs- Has four pitch mix. Throws 88-92 consistently. Has lots of movement on his pitches and an above average curveball.
4. Matt Purke LHP 6'3" 180lbs- Throws 89-92 consistently, can turn it up to 94 with his fastball.
5. Aaron Crow RHP 6'3" 195lbs.- Was drafted by the Nationals last year but decided to play in an independent league and than return to the draft this year.
Obviously, Matzek would be ideal but Turner and Leake wouldn't be bad parting gifts either.

Re: Tigers Draft
Word from draftroom is that Matzek might go to Tigers at 9 because Reds want White. *crosses fingers that this happens*

Re: Tigers Draft
UGGHHHH!!! Matzek was available @ 9 and Tigers drafted Jacob Turner instead. Another righty with no command of his secondary pitches. You let me down DD, you let me down.

Re: Tigers Draft
Tigers don't draft again until pick #58.
Jacob Turner is an okay pick and not exactly out of left field, but there was a better prospect on the board that the Tigers passed up.
Turner is committed to UNC and is expected to spend 2-3 years there, which he could really use as he's very average with his command. He has velocity and movement, but no command.
So much for The Tigers claiming they'd take BPA.

Re: Tigers Draft
Im cool with Turner. Yeah he has a bunch to work on. but man is his upside sky high. A couple years at UNC and he will be ready to rock.
our second pick was Andrew Oliver of OK St. apparently he is a Lefty with a a real nasty fatsball and a great changeup to go along with it. great control of the fastball. hes already a junior and 21, so maybe a fast track to AAA?
our 3rd rounder was Wade Gaynor, a 3rd baseman from W. Kentucky. dont know much about him, from what i could find he seems to have a nice power/contact bat going.
I like it. A rela potential stud in Turner and a power lefty in Oliver. cooool

Re: Tigers Draft
It's not bad, it's just there was a better player available. If Matzek wouldn't have been on the board, I would have liked Turner, but we passed up a great player for a good player after David Chadd said the Tigers would take best talent available.
Oh well, nothing we can do now. Maybe we'll use him in a trade.

story on Turner. seriously, i like him.
Jeez, either Turner is the perfect player, or...
...someone already has a great PR guy.
Given his exposure to former MLB talent (Worrell and Matheny, as mentioned in the story), I'm going to go out on a limb and guess the latter. Still, I hope our recent string of successes with arms conintues. HS pitchers are really risky.

Re: Tigers Draft
What I wrote on the GB:
Tigers draft was good, but passing up Matzek really pisses me off.
Jacob Turner-

6'5" 210lb 18 yrs old RHP; throws between 95-98 mph on his fastball. Needs work on his command though, especially on his secondary pitches.
Andrew Oliver -

6'3" 210lb 22 yr old LHP; throws between 92-97 mph. Needs to add movement to his pitches and needs to develop a breaking pitch.
Wade Gaynor-

6'4" 213lb 21 yr old 3B- Apparently a guy that does everything well. A threat for 20 HR and 20 SB.
Overall, not too shabby. Need more positional players in the later rounds though.

Re: Tigers Draft
After going through the draft results from yesterday, I don't see catcher Max Stassi drafted yet. He was expected to go in the first round. I wouldn't mind taking him at #120 today. He has a few questions over his head, his size and coming back from an injury, but he's a solid hitter and is improving defensively behind the plate. He can also play 2B. He's another highschooler.
