Woohoo. I guess he's a decent utility 2B/SS but no more than that. We need a legit every day 2B and some starting pitching.
I hope we sign Matsui.
btw, geoff blum is a medicre player at best, and if he platoons with burke at 2nd we are in trouble.
btw,i guess me and you will be the lone astros fans during the season.

Matsui sucks too, he benfits from Coors IMO. He was TERRRRRRRIBLE before he went to Colorado, and his Road #'s aren't very good. He was decent before the AS break last year, average after.
I mean, I think he can be a solid every day defensive 2B guy, and he can certainly steal 30+ bases for us and score some runs. I am not sold he can/will hit .280 again outside of Coors. Maybe he can, I dunno. I am not high on him though.
Problem is, Burke is awful as well. He can play the position but he can't hit, atleast not consistantly. I'd rather see us just re-sign Loretta to be the every day 2B until a better long-term solution comes along.
Same ol' Astros, pick up or trade for all the mediocre players who won't make any difference. I liked the Villareal trade and the prospects we've picked up so far, we need to continue to go that route. I'd love to see us get Linebrink somehow, and stay away from Cordero and other overrated scrubs.
Blum, lol.
Matsui, bleh.
Cordero, no thanks.
As far as starting pitching, even more pathetic. No good FA's worth signing that aren't overpriced and overrated. I sure hope the young guys we have continue to mature next season(Albers, Patton) and that Backe/Jennings come back healthy, and I hope some of these prospects we have picked up turn out to be solid players.
Should be a long season....

i personally would go after iguchi first, and if we cant get him go after matsui. im not calling him a bust just yet. i think he can make a decent #2 hitter in the lineup, steal bout 20 bases, and hit .275 at the most.
think of a lineup that consists of
cf bourn
2b matsui
1b berkman
lf lee
rf pence
3b wigginton
c towles
ss everett
and btw, i think we are in position to compete now, forget rebuilding.
and i think we should try and get linebrink, and brocail to add depth to the pen. and i agree with you that we should not overpay for cordero. (let the brewers resign him)
lamb, and loretta wont be back next season so i think we should sign another backup infielder.

I think we can still compete while "rebuilding". The problem is we can't rely on overpriced, mediocre FA's. We HAVE to get some young talent in the farm system or we have no future. We have alot of holes to fill, mainly the bullpen, 2B, and starting pitching, but I don't want us to fall into the trap of doing anything and everything to win now and not rebuild our farm system in the process. We need some good prospects so that not only can we compete in the next year or 2, but several years down the road. I really do like how our GM is atleast being active and trying to make things happen. He's made a few nice moves so far so I'm looking forward to seeing what else he can do in the next year or 2.
I personally think Matsui is crap outside of Coors(look at his away numbers and his numbers before he went to Colorado, they are AWFUL).
His numbers in MMP are terrible too. Plus, he's 32. I guess it's a low risk move if we don't give him a big contract though, I mean can he really be that much worse than Burke or who we have now? Problem is, why bother unless he's a solid upgrade?
Also I think Iguchi is going to Philly? Not certain.
It just sucks that Matsui is our best option, because Burke is crap and nobody else is out there worth getting. That's pretty sad.
Plus, we still need some starting pitching. I think our bullpen will ultimately be pretty decent(improved anyways) but outside of Oswalt we don't have any legit starters.

No **** get rid of him, started out what 1-10? just terrible, how can you keep someone like that. And the bad part is, were over paying him. Well who hes pretty inconsistent, so he may even have a decent yr next yr.
Man no ones really ever posted on here, lol since these MLB teams boards started its always been me, RD, and Vator. Well now AJ posts, but we need MORE!!!! there was a time where I even stopped caring because we were sucking soo bad!!

What's the deal with Adam Everett? The top Cardinals Web blog is throwing him out there as a possibility to play shortstop for us next year. Is Everett available?
If Everett and Rolen were healthy next season, we would have world-class infield defense (Pujols and Yadier Molina have really good gloves too). Of course we would also have Yadi and Everett at the end of our lineup. La Russa would probably have our pitchers bat seventh instead of eighth.
Anyway, thanks if you can fill me in on Everett's situation.

Here's to one more year of hoping Everett can hit better than .230 and have a better OBP than .290.
I know, I'm dreaming.
yeah, ill take eckstein over everett anyday.
ill put him in the 2 hole behind bourn and give him and bourn the green light to steal bases.
just a thought.,

Ugh.
More mediocre players. Blum, Jose Cruz Jr., now Matsui.
Brocail? lol.
Let's just sign every scrub we can find...the older the better too.
Did you get a chance to check out Matsui's numbers outside of Coors? Have fun watching him suck it up all year.
edit: Here are his stats:
Coors: .330 AVG, .381 OBP, .482 SLUG, 4 HR 25 RBI, 14 SB
Away: .249 AVG, .301 OBP, .333 SLUG, 0 HR 12 RBI, 18 SB
His #'s at MMP: .222 AVG(my god), .263 OBP(HOLY HELL), .389 SLUG, 0 HR, 0 RBI, 0 SB
He had 2 good seasons at Coors(mostly AT Coors so the stats are inflated). He was horrible in NY(in 2004 he was "ok"). Pretty sure he can barely hit it out of the infield.
Seems like he's only good for defense and stealing bases WHEN he gets on, which probably won't be often enough.
I hope I'm wrong though, maybe he will turn a corner and become a solid everyday hitter, but I doubt it.
I guess we really can't do any better though, after all it IS the Astros we're talking about.
