Astros to move AAA club to the Woodlands?

Astros owner Jim Crane said Sunday the organization is moving ahead with two planned relocations.

After telling the Houston Chronicle in early March the Astros are eyeing an area north of The Woodlands as the future home of its Class AAA team, Crane acknowledged the plan is still in place and new stadium sites are being explored.

Former Astros star Craig Biggio is helping lead the relocation effort, Crane said, which would move a team based in Oklahoma City to a suburban area about 30 miles north of Houston.

The Astros’ contract with OKC expires in 2014. The Astros would have to purchase their AAA team before moving it.

“We’ve got to get a deal done where we can build a (Woodlands) stadium in a spot that’s far enough away. We’ve been looking at a few spots, but there’s a little work there to do to get that done,” said Crane, prior to the Astros’ season-opener against the Rangers at Minute Maid Park. “That’s going to take a couple years to get that done but you’ve got to start planning.”
