have Paco be our closer

Post#1 » by Neddy » Wed Jun 5, 2013 5:55 am

i am tired of watching the roller coaster ride that is brandon league. his whip indicates that he is a dead on average at best while never pitching multiple innings with any sort of regularity, only asked to get 3 outs with no inherited runners on base... which should help him inflate his stats but rather getting pummeled in all other aspects of stats, advanced or not. Paco is by far the leader of our ball club in WHIPS and BAA. and not just among the bullpen arms either.

brandon league WHIP 1.36
paco WHIP 0.71

brandon's BAA .284
paco's BAA .129

brandon made 10 SOs in 21.1 innings
paco made 20 SOs in 19.2 innings

brandon gave up 23 hits in 21.1 innings
paco gave up just 8 hits in 19.2 innings.

the comparison is clear. forget what Ned paid brandon, if donnie has a half a brain and a pair of baseball manager's balls, he starts paco as our closer asap.
ehhhhh f it.

because kenley's stats aren't comparable to paco's. look them up yourself. nobody on our roster comes close to paco in our bullpen. nobody.

check Paco's WHIP number. unless i read wrong...it's a little lower than baseball reference's. but it's still lower than Kenley's and League's.

every stat points to Paco except ERA (oh Kenley has him in K/9)....have an explanation for me?

i'm all for it.
closer should be the best bullpen arm you have.

ERA is a defense dependent stat. a OFer makes a great catch and throws out a baserunner like puig did twice this week, a double play ends an inning and a pitcher comes off unhurt. the same exact play with another OFer who misjudges the flight of the ball and boom, that turns into an RBI double with more batters coming up to continue the onslaught.

WHIP is much less defense dependent. a pitcher has a total control over walks given up. of course hit still becomes subjective, but that's only half of the equation now with WHIP.

only 3 things a pitcher has total control independent from defense are, walks given up, homeruns given up, and strike outs. 4 things if you count beanballs.

I'm on board.
League is a failure.

todd helton's HR is still traveling in outer space.
kenley in the 8th and Paco in the 9th works for me.
