Mr. Saberman.
Would it be fair for me to say Greinke is actually getting better....or is he the same pitcher he always was and playing in the NL West and Chavez has helped bring his ERA down?
Greinke's career FIP (fielding independent pitching) is 3.42 according to both baseball-reference and fangraphs.
Greinke's career WHIP (walks+hits per inning) is 1.229 according to B-R.
Greinke's carrer BABIP (BA when balls in play) is .305
last year, he posted 3.23 / 1.114 / .276
this year so far, he is 3.23 /1.106 /.296
his numbers to appear slightly better than his career average, but clearly a notch below his Cy Young Year in regards to FIP at 2.33. but even then he recorded WHIP 1.073 / BABIP .303 in 2009, not exactly a huge gap. his SO/9, BB/9 are not too drastically better, although this year his SO/9 is higher, his HR/9 is also up. but not by much. looking at his ball park stat splits from home to away from season to season, it show a slight improvement at home but again, not by much and not at his 2009 year in KC.
in other words, most of his stats have not shown a great deal of swing in year to year comparison other than a small oscillation back and forth, but remarkably consistent over the years, other than 1 great year in 2009 and some early couple of years when he was figuring things out before 2007.
what looks different on paper however, is his ERA and W-L. ERA is defense dependent, ball park dependent, BABIP dependent, and W-L is pretty much meaningless as a pitcher has little control over it.
when ERA numbers are subtracted by FIP, then you will get a clearer picture, of when he was more luckier than good, and some other years not lucky at all. but through it all, since about 2007, he has been pretty consistent in all fielding independent stats, but when it came to luck factor, such as actually having given up worse BABIP numbers in his C-Y year when his FIP is nearly a full run less, it just means he was so dominant that year that even bad lucks couldn't deter him that year.
to sum it all up in a short answer, he has been the same guy pretty much all along.
