I think Alex is saying simply that he is ready to compete for that tight 5th spot, same as Ryu. I think everyone will get their shot plenty throughout the season if they are patient.

Kershaw -- will probably get us about 180 innings with a pre-planned mid to late season break to rest his arm.
Hill may give us 140 innings...
Maeda will need rests, although he is determined to make his 200 innngs for his bonus, it is doubltful.
Urias will probably get up to about 125 to 145 innings during the regular season, tops.

this will leave an extra 200 inngs aside from that 5th spot to make up for the starters' innings. say if McCarthy is the winner of this and the rest start from the pen or DL, Ryu, Wood, Kazmir, Stripling, Stewart, and even Trevor Oaks will get more than enough chances to prove their cases.

to bad Frias got DFA. I don't see him not getting picked up through the wavers. Minn Twins perhaps?

1. Clayton Kershaw, Dodgers (Shredder rank: 1)

Yes, Kershaw missed two months with a back injury, which likely cost him a fourth National League Cy Young Award in six years. No, it doesn't matter. Kershaw was already on a Hall of Fame trajectory entering 2016, and all he did was deliver his most dominant season yet, doing insane things like putting up a 172/11 strikeout-to-walk ratio(!) in 149 innings with a 1.69 ERA. You can offer all the lame "but playoffs" jokes you want, forgetting that he managed to dominate the Cubs in Game 2 of the NL Championship Series, and he's still the best pitcher in baseball. This one's not close.

2017's Top 10 Starting Pitchers Right Now

1. Corey Seager, Dodgers (Shredder rank: 1)

Despite how deep and talented this position has become, it was surprisingly easy to put Seager at the top of the heap. After all, his achievements included being the unanimous NL Rookie of the Year, finishing third in the NL MVP race, having the best rookie shortstop season ever and having the best season by a Dodger shortstop ever. Think about it this way: Seager's .308/.365/.512 (137 wRC+) line is about the same as what Robinson Cano and Mookie Betts hit, and he did it as a rookie playing a capable defensive shortstop for a division-winning team.

We can do better than Utley being on our roster.

Dave loves him too much. I don't want him relying on Utley all year because putting him on the roster is will make Dave do that. Remember Dave called him his favorite player of all time.

well? once the regulars are set, the roster will have 5 bench players.

1 is Barnes.
2 is SVS aka the RH power hitter
3 will be Andre Ethier, if he doesn't win the job out of spring. if he does win, I would fully expect Toles to be here
4 I would assume it have to be the super-utility ****
5 Thompson is a good bet, with Taylor and Culbertson making occasional cameo.

I don't know where Utley fits. he is a 2nd baseman with potentially an occasional 3rd base with diminising defensive ability, who can't hit lefties and slowing down noticeably. wish he would just retire so we can hire him right away as a coach.

yeah I saw that article while i was at my office. good for the kid, I think. he has been overused for the last 6-7 years all the way going back to his high school years.

anywho, I am still wondering what/who will be adding to this roster before the season starts. i feel like there is one more move Andrew will make.

Chase Utley is back.

I don't want him on the team. Doc WILL play him more than he should.

Seems like we are crowded on the bench.
By bringing Utley back,
Could this be a signal of another trade forthcoming?

I'm with Neddy in liking Utley back but only as a coach. I love what he did for us in providing an example for the team to follow, but he's on the decline and taking up a valuable roster spot. The argument is that by limiting his time as a bench player, Chase will be fresh to contribute more productively.

It's nice to have a former top Dodger prospect back in the fold, but Franklin Gutierrez is not expected to be anything more than a platoon player. I'm hearing that his signing indicates that Trayce Thompson's progress in rehabbing from his back injury is not anticipated to go well. It could also leave Scott Van Slyke's future with the team in doubt, which seems odd to me. It also provides another insurance option for Yasiel Puig not following through on his promises of turning things around in a sustained fashion.

Franklin's return to the dodgers is a perplexing choice to say the least, but what is our position players roster now?

considering pitchers will take up 12 spots, the remaining 13 players as of now, would look like

1. 2B R Logan Forsythe
2. SS L Corey Seager
3. 3B R Justin Turner
4. 1B L Adrian Gonzalez
5. RF R Yasiel Puig
6. LF L Andre Ethier
7. C S Yasmani Grandal
8. CF L Joc Perderson
9. C R Austin Barnes
10. Ut R Darin Ruf
11. 2B L Chase Utley
12. Ut R **** Hernandez
13. OF R Franklin Gutierrez

I would assume Toles, Thompson, and SVS won't be on the opening day roster with the team built as is. it makes little sense to give out major league guararnteed contracts this off season just to sit guys down Andrew and Co. got.
if so, it makes sense to grab a guy like Guti as he can handle all 3 OF positions defensively, coming in handy when you need to reserve a bench spot for a power bat specialist against LHP like Darin Ruf who can't play on the field.

Darin Ruf is sold to Samsung Lions of KBO. I think I like this news. one less asset to give up to make room in 40 men roster that is already jampacked. and Darin would crush poor pitching in KBO. he'll make more $ than ever in his career this upcomning season too.
