Think I've seen enough of Hatcher and Romo.

I asked earlier about the trade deadline:

Set Up man.

Capable Relief Arm in Waiting

Post#330 » by Ranma » Wed Jun 14, 2017 4:51 pm

Brandon Morrow is a capable arm we optioned to the minors last week who's ready to be called up at any moment and has been effective in limited usage this season.

Yeah but we should have been all in on Greg Holland.

Olney saying Greg is the best FA signing of the winter.

Him and Jansen as a 1-2 would have been fantastic. It's also my belief (and bro-science opinion) that if those 2 roles are solidified, guys like Baez, Hatcher, Romo wouldn't have so much pressure on them to perform/ compete for a pecking order in the pen.

Proposition of Greg Holland in Offseason

I agreed with you when you advocated for signing him this past winter, but given his performance during his workout and contract demands, I wasn't comfortable in making the commitment to him and, apparently, so were other clubs. Of the 2 clubs most in need for a closer, even Washington bowed out of negotiations despite having a good relationship with Holland's agent, Scott Boras.

The deal ended up being $7 million guaranteed with a $6 million base salary for 2017 and $1 million buyout for 2018. However,
there are $8 million in incentives for this season based on pitching appearances and games finished. He has a $15-million vesting player option for 2018 if he either makes 50 appearances or finishes 30 games this season.

Obviously, the deal looks good now even with the incentive structure, but at the time, I was among those reluctant to even commit $7 million given that he was recuperating from injury at the time. Colorado has to overpay because pitchers are hesitant to risk their stats pitching in Coors Field. Plus, I liked our internal relief options even if we didn't have a solid bridge to Kenley Jansen. In fact, I still do as long as we give opportunities to some of the players in our minor league system.

The Rockies's bullpen coach was also especially familiar with Holland both as a person and professional since he lives in the same city as him and advocated for the team to sign him.

In any case, Olney also listed Kenley Jansen as a nominee for best signing this pas winter. I think we made out alright.

Buster Olney, ESPNinsider.com (6/11/17)
There was a lot of anticipation among scouts for Greg Holland's first spring training outing in a Colorado Rockies uniform, and there was a lot of mystery. Holland had thrown for scouts in November, as he neared the end of his summer of rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery, and in the opinion of many who were there, he did not look good. His fastball velocity was way down from his days with the Kansas City Royals, with some teams clocking him in the mid-80s.

As such, there was some surprise when the Rockies signed Holland before he hosted another army of scouts, and the incentive-laden contract had more earning power than expected by some rival executives. In the mind of some in the industry, Colorado had bet heavily on a pitcher, far more than others would have based on that workout.
...

Holland's agent, Scott Boras, assumed that the best offers for his client would develop after the big three free-agent closers came off the board -- Mark Melancon, Aroldis Chapman and Kenley Jansen. As the game of free-agent musical chairs played out and the big three signed, the Washington Nationals and the Rockies were the teams with the greatest need for a closer. Washington's ownership wasn’t ready to commit the kind of money that Boras discussed.

2017 REGULAR SEASON LA Dodgers & international

Post#337 » by Quake Griffin » Thu Jun 15, 2017 5:34 pm

Richie stinking again and ruining our chance for a sweep.
37 IP (through this point of the game) 4.76 ERA.

I don't trust Ryu (sorry Neddy) but I'd like to reassert that I'm angry about Rich Hill because he stays hurt, is only projected to give us a little over 100 IP and I don't think a good portion of those 100 innings will be effective.

This guy doesn't have a start longer than 5 innings this year.

We gave him money to pray hed be healthy n ready by October. By far my most hated signing of the Friedman era.

like I have been saying for a long time, age matters. I sure hope Urias gets his proper and badly needed rest and stay out for the foreseeable future. we need his arm in a couple of years to be as dominant as he has shown he can be.
ehhhhh f it.
