Prospects and trade discussion
"It's really hard to imagine a scenario where it makes sense for us to move him."
Farhan to Bill Plunkett on Verdugo.
Thank you!
I don't care if Ranma views him as trade bait from the gate:
1) Don't let other teams know you think he's bait.
2) Don't get cheated value wise just because we've done a great job developing talent and have a surplus.
I've said from Day 1 since F&Z got here. I think teams treat us differently. It's obvious why. Our farm is much better to pick from. Our FO is smart and advanced and they don't want to get burned.
Dont care. I want everything coming to us for Verdugo. There's a solid major leaguer another team is getting.

i would even suggest that there is a good chance that Joc is traded and Alex is our starter OF regardless which position he plays.

Ranma wrote:In any case, it's obvious Quake is higher on Verdugo than I am, but I wouldn't necessarily be opposed to him making the Dodgers if we're dealing Puig away and getting another right-handed power bat in return in left field. I've made mention of my concern over Verdugo's attitude but it isn't a deal-breaker. Still, Verdugo would make more sense if the Dodgers did trade Yasiel Puig for Ryan Braun, which is doubly repulsive to me.
GM Farhan Zaidi has come out recently and said something along the lines of Verdugo being close to ready for the Show and it'd be hard to envision a scenario that we'd be dealing him. However, he said similar things just before Dee Gordon was traded. Personally, I like that Zaidi is trying to build up his value in order to maximize his return. Like I've said before that while I view him as more trade bait than long-term fixture, I don't want to dump Verdugo, which I actually meant to say that I don't want to get less in trade than his worth.
Verdugo is a valuable prospect right now, but like Jose De Leon before him, he's approaching a point of diminishing value. I think he's at peak value right now, which is another reason why I want him dealt. AV is a fine prospect in his own right, but he's not someone I would clear a roster spot for unlike Seager, Bellinger, or even Pederson during their respective circumstances.

Joc as Alternate Trade Option
Neddy wrote:i would even suggest that there is a good chance that Joc is traded and Alex is our starter OF regardless which position he plays.
I've actually heard that scenario bandied about in trade talk. Personally, I'd rather stick with Joc but Verdugo's arm would actually make more sense in a corner outfield spot once Jeren Kendall is called up, so I can see why the choice would be Verdugo over Joc.
However, Joc's power bat and improving batting approach represents more upside a higher ceiling to me than Verdugo's line-drive bat despite the 4-year age difference. Plus, I trust Joc more in CF than Verdugo until Kendall proves ready, which I've said previously is a fairly decent possibility to be within the next couple of years.
It would depend on what we would respectively get back in return for each player, but all things being equal, I'd rather keep Joc. However, the latest chatter is that the Dodgers prefer to keep Verdugo just in case there is an injury to an outfielder on the MLB roster. On a side note, J.D. Martinez was just hit on his left hand with the 2nd pitch during his debut at-bat as a Diamondback after the trade and had to leave the game.

Ranma,
I understand we're closer to agreeing than I previously thought. Just wanted to post the quote and beat the dead horse again cuz it's important to me.
Your example of Verdugo for Hand straight up being a no no is what I'm thinking of with that post.

Wait a minute. I've made a point on at least 2 occasions to say that I did not want to trade Verdugo straight up for Hand. My proposals included Padres prospects ranked lower than Verdugo but were higher on my personal board such as Cal Quantrill and Luis Almanzar.

Yes. Good working environment. Great place to learn and hone my skills.
I think I want a bigger town though. Still playing the field with no kids. Need some diversity.

This is actually interesting and something I did not consider. Kemp had a strong arm as well, which is why I wanted him in RF despite his reluctance to play there. I'm going to assume that Kemp had faster wheels than Verdugo as well, but Kemp's instincts were lacking while Verdugo gets positive marks for his.
It'd obviously be hard for me to compare the two without seeing them play at the MLB level but this is definitely something to think about. Like Kemp, I like Verdugo's profile better in RF than I do in CF. Then again, I had little faith in Seager sticking at SS, so we'll see what the kid's got if and when he gets the opportunity.
I can't say that I'm looking forward to seeing him get the chance, though, since that would mean an injury to this very special ballclub. I absolutely love this team.

I'm actually closer to Minneapolis and fly out of their airport.
I'd like to get to that area eventually more so than Milwaukee. But Im licensed in Illinois, so the Milwaukee-Chicago thing is possible since I'm intent on opening my own firm eventually.
Blah. Too much to think about. Just going to take the gig day by day.

Nevermind. I misinterpreted the use of "no no" in context of your post. This is what got me confused. My apologies.

Dodgers' Interest in McCutchen
Olney speculated earlier this month that he thought the Dodgers would be "opportunity buyers" for Andrew McCutchen. I've read or heard from established media sources that Cutch is expected to be moved by the Pirates by the trade deadline. However, initial buzz had Pittsburgh content with keeping him for next season to continue to compete if no suitable deal is available, but the latest talk has McCutchen resigned to being moved and even uncertain if the Pirates will even exercise his club option for next season before he becomes an UFA for 2019.
There's been increased but loose connections to the Dodgers' interest in him of late, but I've only seen peripheral chatter so far. In any case, I've also advocated for pursuing him but I still don't feel an urgency to acquire him unless it's on the cheap. I initially wanted a package of McCutchen and Gerritt Cole but Cole looks unavailable and likely cost-prohibitive.
