Maeda's Future

Post#771 » by Ranma » Mon Oct 16, 2017 1:24 am

Quake Griffin wrote:Btw...is Maeda's stuff just suited for the bullpen overall? As in should we just throw him there for the rest of his career as a Dodger?

His velo is up a tick higher. Hitters can't really eliminate pitches or a side of the plate since he has so much stuff too.
If we moved him to the pen next year, he'd never hit his incentives. His contract would stay cheap as hell and could be a force as a setup man or setup to the setup man. My guess is he or his agent would throw a huge fit about it.

Neddy wrote:does his stuff work better as a bullpen arm? YES.

would he want the job? NO.

does he have a choice? HAHA HELL NO. he is under a contract, we can use him however the hell we want to.

but... is that the right thing to do or even a smart thing to do? if we are willing to use him as a setup man, Maeda's value would be much higher by trading him and his fantastic contract to a small market team on a budget.

on the other hand, if you look at it strictly as a business move, we can do anything with him and he signed that deal willingly.

Maeda is definitely better as a reliever right now than starting pitcher, but at the same time, he's serviceable and more valuable as a trade asset as a starting pitcher given his contract as Neddy said.

As a starter, Kenta has a more varied repertoire of pitches but not all of his pitches are as good as his slider and fastball as a reliever. As it has been stated, his fastball has an uptick in velocity as a relief pitcher.

Maybe he can improve his other pitches as a starter but it's unrealistic to expect that from him this late into his professional career. I'm fine with Kenta Maeda being a starting option for next season since he's still decent as a starting pitcher, but once the postseason rolls around, he should be moved to the bullpen.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the Dodgers were able to negotiate that team-friendly incentive-laden contract because the market for him was a little soft due to concerns over his medical records. It may be healthier for him to be a reliever than starter in this context.

Also, maybe this really isn't a factor, but he hasn't been able to loosen up his arms and shoulders like he normally would as a starter since he's had to move to the dugout to do his funky arm-swinging warmups. Being a reliever in the bullpen awards hm more of an opportunity to incorporate this particular routine into his warm-ups.

No.

I’m used to it, so I was more composed than I thought I’d be.

Justin Turner ties the game with an opposite-field grounder that got through to RF. About time, fellas.

issue with him is, even though I have no clue if he cares of not, is that being paid by his base salary without incentives that comes with being a starter, he is subjected to heavy taxation by Japanese government along with US taxes he must pay. his 3 million salary quickly becomes less than a million after his agents are paid off after the taxes between the two countries. at that rate, he would be better off going back home and pitch for the piss poor Hiroshima ball club.
