2016 postseason game thread

Post#1 » by Neddy » Tue Oct 4, 2016 5:41 am

goddamn it we are finally here. Dodgers are in. and it seems to me that we may have the softest path to the World Series. Nats are a mess, and if we play them like we have against them this season, we may be able to reset our rotation before the Cubs series and whether it is the Mets or the Gnats chicago will face, Cubs are in for a dog fight.

anyway, I have my own projected playoff roster and knowing what's been said about who is already in, I see 11 pitchers and 14 position players.

catchers
1. Yaz
2. Ruiz- so much a better option than Ellis, I must say. he had one bad outing in blue at his dodger debut, but he has corrected his issues and i have not seen any problem behind the plate with him since.
infield
3. Gonzo
4. Utley
5. Seager
6. Turner
7. Culberson-he has been a great defensive SS and a clutch batsman in crucial moments for us, and he frankly has been the better hitter than **** this season.
8. Segedin-we need a corner infield utility guy to be a pinch hitter and he fits the bill perfectly.
outfield
9. Kendrick
10. Pederson
11. Reddick
12. Puig
13. Ethier-he is gonna be the primary lefty pinch hitter off the bench. I don't like his career pinch hitting BA though.
14. Toles. this is the hardest choice... offensively you have got to go with Toles, but defensively **** belongs here. we would only have 1 extra middle infielder in Culberson otherwise. against Max the heterochromia and Tanner Roark, we could sport 3 right handed pinch hitters with Culberson/Segedin/Puig to go along with 1 lefty in Ethier if we go with defense, but I think Dave gambles that since Kendrick is a 2B man by trade, we keep just 2 SSs and we go with Toles here to give 2 lefty pinch hitters.

pitchers
starters
1. Kershaw
2. Hill
3. Maeda
4. Urias
closer
5. Jensen.
setup
6. Blanton
7. Baez
middle relief
8. Dayton (L)
9. Avilan (L) this one I am sure is gonna be controversial, but since the Sept 1st, he has not given up a run in 8 total innings of pitching while giving up only 4 hits and 3 BBs while raking 10 SOs. I know Josh FIelds has done a tremendous job in the same duration, going something like 9.2 innings with 5 Hits and 5 walks, with 1 ER. but I dont trust his career path and think he is due to give up some big hits in key situations. I would rather have 3 lefties in the pen with 4 righty relivers, but if we choose to go with Kershaw on a short rest in game 4 no matter what, then Urias would be a reliever and I can see us keeping Fields or even Josh Ravin, as since his return he has recorded 9.2 innings and giving up exactly 2 hits, 4 walks and just 1 ER off of a 1 HR. I hate the small sample size that is his entire season... 9.2 innings, but I can see this move as well.
long relief
10. Wood (L)
11. Stripling - that goddamn knuckle curve is a beauty. he would be devastating as a spot reliever, actually. but he can give us 3 innings if needed, and even be a 7th inning setup guy as he is so different from Kenley or Blanton.
ehhhhh f it.

I am less than thrilled at how we entered the postseason and even less thrilled that we made no attempt to eliminate the Giants when the Giants made sure we didn't make it in 2012.

I am absolutely sick to my stomach of this narrative that baseball players need this much rest or that much rest.

We have 4 days off from the end of the season until Game 1. There was no need to take our foot off the gas.
There was ABSOLUTELY no need to run with Brandon McCarthy in the 1st game where we had a decent shot of winning.

Unbelievable.
this team better beat the Nats or I'm gonna be the most pissed I've ever been in any of our playoff exits.

NLDS Roster Spots

Post#4 » by Ranma » Wed Oct 5, 2016 12:45 am

I agree with Roberts going with 7 relievers for the bullpen given the importance of relief pitching in the postseason and Urias, Maeda, and Hill (blister issues) all susceptible to short outings at the moment. Even Kershaw has some question marks coming back from back injury.

As I said before, I don't like Ethier getting a spot so hopefully he'll atone for last year's tantrum. I 'm pleasantly surprised to see Austin Barnes on the postseason roster. His positional versatility and right-handed bat could help him become an unsung hero for us. Happy to see Stripling make the bullpen, but a little disappointed not to see Wood make it. However, I understand Roberts' call to go with Avilan over him given Wood's recent recovery from injury. Culberson's glove should be a great option in the infield and hopefully his clutch hitting will continue deep into the postseason.

Austin made the roster? wow did not see that coming, but good move by Dave.

as for Andre's tantrum, I did not mind it all that much. he was showing his competitiveness and passion, although as a veteran he should have known better. but in the end, we have to consider that it was Mattingly who was our manager at the time, messing up the pitching staff once again.

and as I type this, Mark Trumbo has gone the distance. 2-1 O's now

Not my favorite postseason roster.

Things we can't control:
- It sucks that Liberatore and Coleman did not make it to the promised land. They were fantastic during the year.

Things we can control:
- I don't get why we put Austin Barnes in the roster. We have Ruiz's RHB at catcher. We have Culberson's glove to give Chase a spell.

- Ethier and Redick, together, on any roster is redundant. The whole lefty-righty thing has been interesting to me. Somehow I feel like our FO thinks the league is RHP dominant and that we can take advantage of it.

- I don't like Ross Stripling or Avilan for this spot. I dont trust Strip coming out of the pen. Avilan should only be a specialist come playoff time.

Positives:
- I think this is the year Baez turns the corner. No big HR ball this playoffs off him. That's my bet.

- Culberson earned this spot. I'm glad he's on the roster.

- I like Julio for Game 3, NOT Kenta. But that wont happen.

maybe Grandal's health is far worse than they are letting us on. the FO's official reason for trading Ellis for Ruiz was that we were not confident that Ellis could be a full time catcher going into the playoffs due to underlying health issues Grandal has been fighting off through out the season.

as for Ross, we don't have a ton of other options that can go the distance if needed. Jesse Chavez and Alex Wood would be the other options, I wanted Alex on the team but between Jesse and Ross, I think I trust Ross and his filthy knuckle curve.

Thor nearly gave up a HR to Bumgarner just now. no Giant could catch up to Thor's fastball so far with 5 Ks but the pitcher nearly jacked it out of the CitiField? I think the Mets coaches need to remind Thor not to be careless with location of his fastballs even if the batter is the opposing pitcher. as long as he is hitting the corners like he has been, he should do just fine. throw right down the middle, 99 mph will stilll get crushed.

I have to admit that Madison Bumgarner is clearly the best pitcher in the postseason right now, especially with Kershaw still not 100% from his back injury and needing to prove himself in the playoffs. However, the way I see it, it would be better for the Cubs to face a dangerous Giants team and I'd prefer to face San Francisco over Chicago in the National League Championship Series.

The intensity of a Dodgers-Giants rivalry would amp up the excitment factor while providing us with an arguably easier path to the World Series instead of facing the more complete Cubs team. I would have preferred to beat San Francisco in the season-ending series, but I can't fault Roberts too much for auditioning players for spots on the playoff roster. However, having played for Bochy as a Padre and Giant over a stretch of his final 4 seasons as a player, I hope Dave does not have a soft spot for his former manager in letting up his foot off the gas. Momentum is a nice benefit to have going into the postseason.

In any case, all would be for naught if we don't beat the Nationals, so hopefully we can rebuild momentum there. If we can't beat a Washington ballclub dealing with injuries to Strasburg and Ramos as well as lingering ailments for Harper and Murphy, then we don't deserve to play in October.

Having said all that, it would be painful to lose in the postseason to a team we could have eliminated at the end of the regular season. Call it the Peter-Parker Syndrome.

Making Up for Mistake

Post#18 » by Ranma » Fri Oct 7, 2016 10:33 pm

Utley's error certainly doesn't help Kershaw's pitch count, but at least he makes up for it with the RBI single...Red Beard just went yard to put us up 4 - 0.
