What to Do with Walker

Neddy wrote:got one out, but even if he makes it out without harm, we can't depend on this kid for the first real chance at the ring since 88.

he did get himself out, but can't count on this kid doing the same in the post season on an inning ending GIDP.

I share your concerns, but to be fair, that 1st hit he gave up was close to being fielded, though it was hit hard. In any case, I just like him over most of our other options. Avilan is the only one with a strong case over him right now. McCarthy looks like a wild card, like you said.

The kid has the stuff and you're right in that his mental approach could definitely use more polish, but he's better than Baez right now, and neither Stripling or Stewart have inspired much confidence in me.

Barnes Burning

Barnes keeps living up to the faith I have in him. Dude is a gamer and will do what it takes to win.

Team Ranma on Walker.

Stuff is too filthy at this point and the upside for 2017 alone is better than the known quantity in a Baez or Strip to me.

with tonight's 2 hits he just gave up and a walk he issued before the K and GIDP, he is probably back to 2.0 plus WHIP again. I can't trust a pitcher with that kind of inconsistency and waste a post season roster spot in hopes he gets his **** together by then. accomplished guys like Rick Ankiel felt apart in game 1 of 2000 NLDS against the Mets. he was never the same. not only for the sake of my team's playoff chances, if this kid has a mental break down like Rick did in a playoff game, what damage would it do to this kid for his future? I just don't think it is wise.

and we are still in this game!

god it took 7 and 2/3 innings to knock MadBum out of this game. I know CT3 is coming up, but we have a bench full of lefties. why not bring up Either in this spot?

okay thanks to Ranma's recommendation, I am for the first time carefully watching Tony Congrini aka Tony #2. his fastball is still around the same as I remembered but his change up was a bit sharper, a tick or two slower than before. the separation between his fastball and his change up is definitely better.

his fastball is slightly better than I remember too now that I have seen it more than just a few. his separation between his fastball and change up used to be like 6-7 miles apart, it is now good 10 to 12 miles per hour apart. haven't seen his slider yet and here comes a lefty. let's watch.

How About That Tony Cingrani? (Nevermind)

Post#1372 » by Ranma » Sun Sep 24, 2017 3:49 am

Neddy wrote:well to be honest, I haven't paid much attention to his "stuff" as of late, I remember him mostly as the guy who couldn't separate his pitches very well. his fastball to his changeup to his sliders were all too similar in speed and breaks. maybe that will be my homework assignment for the game.

What do you think of Cingrani's pitching tonight, Neddy?

Udpate: I just saw his answers.

what the hell was that?

6 straight fastballs to Joe Panik. no slider there.

did Rick Honeycutt convince him to drop his slider altogether and become a fastball/changeup guy? both of those two pitches seemed a little better than before, but he mostly threw his fastball, both to righties and lefties. I was expecting to see at least 1 slider with that last at bat.

his stuff does seem better than Avilan. I concede that to Ranma.

Cingrani Supposedly Using Slider More

Post#1380 » by Ranma » Sun Sep 24, 2017 4:00 am

Jeff Sullivan, FanGraphs.com (9/18/17)
Cingrani’s highest-ever season slider rate was 13%. At the time of the trade at the end of July, Cingrani’s slider rate was 3%. With the Dodgers, it’s been 28%. Since the beginning of August, no pitcher in baseball has reduced his fastball rate as much as Cingrani has. Cingrani used to be mostly a one-pitch pitcher. It was one of the traits that put him on the map earlier in his career, when he was generating a bunch of strikeouts against high-level competition. Several articles were written about whether Cingrani could succeed with but one single weapon. The Dodgers are actively changing that approach. And, coincidentally, here are Cingrani’s slider strike rates, by year.

    2013: 48% strikes
    2014: 47%
    2015: 48%
    2016: 47%
    2017: 62%

Cingrani is now locating the hard slider more consistently, which is causing opponents to give it more respect. It’s no longer a pitch they can ignore, and maybe it’s gotten better because of the increased repetitions alone. I’m not sure, but for one reason or another, the slider is playing up.

Analysis Might Have Saved Tony Cingrani
