Looking to next offseason...Jason Kidd?

Post#1 » by Hydroponic3385 » Wed Jul 9, 2008 10:00 pm

I know many of you may be like WTF with this. Yes, he's already like 35. And yes, it may be dumb to think about next offseason already. But just contemplate this...

Jason Kidd is entering the final season of his very lucrative contract with the Mavericks. I'm assuming since he's already made so much in the NBA and never won a title, it wouldn't be unrealistic to assume he just plain wants to join a contending team. I mean, that's pretty obvious, he even attempted that with Dallas (obviously, didn't work out so well).

I think there's a very good chance he'd come very cheap for a contending team. Like I said, he's already made plenty, and he must understand that contending teams can't afford to sign a guy 35+ for a big contract. So what if the Cavs were to offer anywhere from the vet minimum to MLE for Kidd next year. If we were to sign him to a 1 or 2 year contract, I think it'd be very worth it. He'd still be a very nice PG, especially combining him with West, that's a very nice PG duo. It'd definitely please Lebron, as he and Kidd are great friends and they've always wanted to play together. His smaller contract also wouldn't affect our salary cap too much for the future.

Now, how likely would it be he joins the Cavs next year? I'm going to assume he only wants to play for contenders. Many contenders already have PG's I'd assume they're happy with:
San Antonio (Parker), Boston (Rondo), New Orleans (Paul), Phoenix (Nash), Utah (Williams), Detroit (Billups - and if they get rid of him, then I'd assume that aren't trying to be a contender), etc.

I'd say it'd come down to Cleveland, Orlando, and the Lakers to acquire a cheaply priced, older, but still effective for the next couple years Jason Kidd.

Lebron would have a supporting cast including guys like Kidd, Gibson, West, Ilgauskas, Hickson, Wallace, Smith, Pavlovic, any free agent signing this offseason, and whoever we acquire for Wally + Andy + pick towards the trading deadline this year (like a Miller or Stephen Jackson or Redd, who knows who'll be available). And perhaps guys like Simien, Jackson, next year's rookie(s) depending on what they do.

Just an idea that popped into my head. I doubt he stays in Dallas, and assume he wants to play for a winner, not so much caring about his contract. Any thoughts?

would the Cavs resign both Boobie Gibson and Delonte West this year if they have an eye towards making a run at Kidd next?

i think you're right, if DAL doesn't go far this summe,r I think Kidd leaves Dallas for a chance at a ring. I was thinking the Celtics might make a stab at him ----- we have rondo, but Kidd would be such a great teacher... they might even be able to play some together --- but CLE makes a lot more sense.

That's true, you can add Boston to the list of Cleveland, Orlando, and LAL perhaps. But I figured by next year, Rondo will have had 2 seasons starting full-time with this new Celtic team, and it'd be kind of weird to have Kidd come in. Plus...I just really hope the Lakers and Celtics both don't get him...you guys luck out enough with free agents. It's time for the Cavs to for once lol.

Jason Kidd loves the $$ . He's not coming cheap untill he's got nothing left in the tank.

Appearently he's looking for a double figures extension . Go figure .

I didn't want Kidd this year. I really can't imagine wanting him the season after next.

The only way I do that is for the league minimum near the end of the year like what the celtics did to get Cassel sort of
