Interested in an Iverson Blockbuster?

Post#1 » by ecuhus1981 » Wed Jul 16, 2008 6:31 am

Hey all, Nets/Mavericks fan here. Well, the Camby trade has shaken the NBA world, and it seems we're all waiting for the other shoe to drop in Denver's rebuilding efforts. That's right, I'm talking about Iverson.

Cleveland seems to be in a particularly good position to acquire the All-Star guard, with loads of contracts expiring before 2010. Do you think this deal could happen?

DEN-CLE

Iverson, Martin, Hunter and Atkins

for

Wallace, Varejao, Smith, Pavlovic and Gibson (S&T 4 years, $19mil)

***Gibson's S&T represented here by Jones' contract***

Ecuhus, can we just take out Atkins and Pavs? Atkins has a team option (i believe) for next year so he's just an expiring.

And could Cleveland switch out Snow for Smith? Joe Smith is valuable to us. Snow isn't.

So, Iverson, Martin, Hunter for Wallace, Varejao, Gibson, and Snow.

That leaves the Cavs with...

PG- West, DJ
SG- Iverson, Pavs, Wally
SF- LeBron, Pavs, Wally
PF- K-Mart, Smith, Hickson
C- Z, Hunter

not bad... plus we still have our MLE and LLE to sign a PG so DJ isn't our backup. If we could get a Tyronn Lue or a Keyon Dooling, then we could trade DJ and Wally at the deadline if another player was made available....

Taking on Martin is negative value, so there is no reason for the Cavs to include varejo and gibson.

Iverson is a superstar in every sense of the word. THAT'S the reason.

As for removing Pavlovic and Atkins, c'mon, that's a clear value downgrade for the Nuggets. It all depends on what they're willing to take, but you have to give to get, and the Cavaliers are getting an All-Star, plus they don't lose much salary cap flexibility for 2009 at all. Also, playing with James for a year would probably have Iverson foaming at the mouth to extend his deal. He would likely be willing to take a drastic paycut (2 years for a total of $21mil?) to stay, and that could very well keep James in Cleveland past 2010.

Is Iverson & James that much better than Iverson & Anthony? It's not like Iverson has been playing in a talent wasteland.

The bigger question is would Iverson be willing to play a supporting role to Lebron.

Plus, there is the nagging question of Lebron using his ETO in 2010.

That's a lot to work out, even before getting Iverson to agree to a two year deal that would expire at age 35. I see him trying for a longer contract than that.

Yes, much, much, much better. Anthony is not in the same league as James. If LeBron is a 10 on a scale of 1-10, then Carmello is a 7.5.

I question whether AI would fit into our half court system at all? Yes he is a superstar, but one that runs in a fast pace offense. Not sure how well that'll translate to our offense, or lack of offense..

I think he would be okay as he can still get by his defender any time he wants. And he can pass the rock when he wants to. Imagine Lebron playing off the ball and AI breaking people ankles, The D couldnt handle both those guys on the floor at the same time.

Coach Brown might have a heart attack though, and I could see Lebron and AI having issues with who would get to pound the ball at the top of the key for 20 seconds in Browns "system". Maybe they would take turns.

John Hollinger of ESPN wrote this about NO over paying for James Posey, but you can easily apply this comparison to 'AI' since he's on the wrong side of 30 too (Allen Iverson is 33 years old). 'AI' relies on his quickness that is fading now with age which is natural and your biased opinion seems to favor taking away the CAVs future for a fading star who couldn't make it happen in Denver with Melo and Campy.

Comb through the books and try to find perimeter players who played well until 35 -- it's tough. Now try to find some who played well 'til that age after scoring single figures in their 20s. Good luck.

For better insight into Posey's future, let's take a look at what happened to some similar players -- those who rated as statistically similar based on their performance at the same age, played primarily on the wing and were in his league as a defender. The top names on that list are Bryon Russell, Dan Majerle, Jaren Jackson, Rick Fox and Raja Bell.

• Bell is only a year older and declined noticeably last season.
• Majerle declined sharply starting at 30 and had his last useful season at 32.
• Jackson had a quality season at 32 but played 25 games the rest of his career.
• Russell lost it at 31 and never got it back, though he managed to hang around for four more years.
• Fox played reasonably well until 33 and then lost it, hard, and was out of the league by 35.

Swim deeper in the similarity pool and you'll find similar stories from Walter McCarty, Shandon Anderson, Lucious Harris, Doug Christie, Eddie Jones and Aaron McKie.
