No, I don't think we have a chance at Josh Smith. But I thought this article was interesting, and I wonder who that Eastern Conference "big dog" is. It's likely Detroit, but after that we may be the next most likely:

The Hawks are weighing two sign-and-trade offers for restricted free agent Josh Smith, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Sekou Smith writes that the two offers come from "a Western Conference power and...an Eastern Conference big dog." Atlanta might not be willing to pay Smith what he feels he deserves, leaving either a sign-and-trade or the possibility that he will accept a qualifying offer and leave for nothing as an unrestricted free agent next summer. The last time Sekou hinted at a blockbuster trade Mike Bibby wound up in a Hawks uniform, so we're all ears. Jul. 26 - 10:43 am et

I would speculate that the big dog from the East is Detroit since they are looking to get younger and have assets that could be appealing to Atlanta.

Re: Josh Smith (not to get people's hopes up)
its okay to get your hopes up
it is Atlanta after all
and if they truly believe they won't sign the guy after 1 season then they just might get what they can now
I've not been optimistic on many of the rumors before this..
but I am hoping and praying on this one
it'd be nice to acquire a proven YOUNG player on the way up instead of what we've been getting
Atlanta needs size and we do have Varejao rumored to be on the table

Re: Josh Smith (not to get people's hopes up)
What would we offer?
Is Detroit offering Billups(I can possibly see that) maybe a pick, or Prince + Mcdysse? Unless they are going to try and get a 1-year use out of Sheed and go for the gusto. I dont know because Atl wants a true big and I dont know if they are targeting Maxiell (who isnt big but is more of a true PF).
Do we offer a package with Bobbie? AV/Boobie/1st ? Would we do that? I may have to jump on that and resign West. But dont they have a crowd in the backcourt? What if Ferry is doing a deal to relieve them of the always injured Speedy Claxton? He will be off our books by 2010. Snow always wanted to go to ATL where he lives in the offseason but he likely wont report or asked not to report.
Ferry doesnt want to give up a 1st or too many assets so what about:
Eric Snow/ AV / Aleksander Pavolovic/ JJ Hickson
for
Speedy Claxton and Josh Smith
If AV opts out they can go after Odom,Marion, Boozer, etc. I can see both parts doing that. Maybe a pick added but just about. Claxton has been a bust for them and if Snow retires they get another trade exception. AV and Horford may be too defensive unless they start Horford with Zaza. But a solid rotation with good post defense none the less. Pavs replaces the lost of Childress as the backup wing. Hickson has looked very promising and signed to rookie contract unless they rather have our future 1st. I dont know, I guess ya'll let me know.

Re: Josh Smith (not to get people's hopes up)
lets see... what would we offer them for Josh Smith?
how about: almost anything they wanted except LeBron
I think they are afraid of losing the guy for nothing though
they already lost Childress for nothing and are on the verge of becoming basketballs laughing stock (if they aren't already)

Is anyone else hoping that the swift hand of David Stern comes down on this Josh Smith trade like Gasol last year? Oh and then reject Denvers offer to match JR Smith at the full MLE. Praying for a pipe dream.

Re: Josh Smith (not to get people's hopes up)
So I am definately thinking it is the Cavs. Now I definately think Snow or a smaller expiring for Speedy is part of the deal. Possibly Joe Smith because they need help upfront. Now of value it has to be some sort of combination of Anderson Varajao, JJ Hickson, future 1st, Boobie, and Sasha Pavolovic.
I was high on Pavs being part of the deal to replace Childress but they signed Mo Evans. I dont know about Boobie because they had a crowded backcourt but still unsure. Our 1st will likely be late unless we give them the chi 2nd also. Hickson would be a good pickup but not really ready for the hardwood but in couple years Hickson and Horford may be an enticing duo downlow. Anderson Varajao I see gining them immediately help and he could possibly sign an extention if he ends up starting.
Really I just dont know but we would get Speedy as part of the deal without a doubt. Snow would love to go home and retire. But I am trying to see what else we would package. I think ATL is trying to see what else they can get or if anybody else raises their offer.

We can just give you Zaza for Av, Snow, Pavlovic and JJ Hickoson if we wanted those players. I don't think you guys have anything to offer us.

Pachulia wouldn't get you Hickson much less Varejao and an expiring. Of all teams to be arguing that another team doesn't have much to offer.

Re: Josh Smith (not to get people's hopes up)
I think something revolving around big z would be beneficial for both teams, as the Hawks are looking for a true center to pair with horford, and that would allow big ben to slip back to C, where he seems most comfortable. A frontline of Ben/AV at C then JSmoove/JSmith at pf would be decent although you would be giving up some of your rebounding and easy putbacks.

Says the guy who has free agents leaving the country to not be on his team anymore.
