Proposed 4-way for Dirk

A pipe dream, but it makes sense for all involved: Cavs, Mavs, Blazers, Grizzlies

Cavs get: Nowitzki, Stackhouse, Frye
Mavs get: Varejao, Szczerbiak, Batum, Outlaw
Blazers get: Conley, Bass, Snow
Grizzlies get: Hickson, Rodriguez

For the sake of full disclosure, I'm a Cavs fan. I think the Cavs give up a lot, but they get a legit star and a good shot at the title. The team that gets the best player always has to over-pay -- unless it's the Lakers! The biggest concern is whether or not the Cavs would have enough defense left to beat good teams during the play-offs.

Mavs get a slew of young, quality players and Wally, who can still shoot and offers cap relief at the end of the year. Outlaw has starter potential and AV gives them an active, bog defender.

Blazers get to see if change of venue helps Conley and serviceable big in Bass. Snow becomes mentor and unofficial assistant coach to young team.

Thoughts?

Grizzlies free up starting spot for Lowry and get potential stud Hickson and serviceable guard for Conley.

Horrible for Dallas. Cleveland would have to add in 2 first rounders at the very least and even that wouldn't be enough. It is also a very average deal for Memphis and I doubt they do it. The Blazers actually make out the best.

I think there is only one way Dal does a one way trade and that is if they go rebuild ,lose big contracts and get expirings, with an eye on 2010. They must commit to being horrible for one year.

In 2010 Dallas goes after Bosh or Amare or if they want 2009 and try for Boozer,Marion,or Odom I think they would take Snow and some stuff instead of Z.

But even this is unlikely.

There's no reason for Dallas to do this. The "young talent" doesn't really exist here in the sense of giving up an all-star with the unique abilities that Dirk has.

IMO, Dirk is not under rated -- not when you are a former MVP.

It's kind of early in the season to talk about trading for Dirk. He's leveled off, but he is still a great talent who is nearing the edge of his prime. He's played very uninspired basketball so far this season which shows in the Mavs 2 wins and 7 losses. I don't see the CAVs trading two first round picks for him either unless the CAVs are trading mostly expiring like the Lakers did for Gasol, but I don't expect that kind of gift.

Someone please refresh my memory of a team with young players to trade for Dirk and would be in the position to compete for a championship after the trade which Dirk would want -- I can't think of one. Dirk is 30 years old and 3 years removed from his MVP season which doesn't mean that he still has the same value as he had when he was the MVP. I am not sure adding more teams into the trade mix makes a trade for Dirk happen either.

The Dallas Mavericks are 2-6 to start the new season. It’s too early to write what should be a quality team off, but so far they’re a mess.

Dirk Nowitzki is scoring 22.1 points per game but not shooting well, and not doing much else aside from scoring.

But the rest of the NBA has certainly figured them out. Put your best defender, whether he's big or small, on Dirk Nowitzki. Hound him as much as you can. And sooner or later, the Mavericks wilt.

After consecutive first-round exits and an MVP award that many experts have questioned, Dirk certainly has reason to be motivated. The only problem is that the motivation has yet to show up in his play this season.

Dirk has already called out his teammates, and said he must do a better job of preparing them, but the best way for him to do so is through his play.

He must be more aggressive in driving to the basket, attacking the paint, and getting to the line.
