With one round under our belt...

Post#1 » by eyejayem » Tue Apr 28, 2009 5:34 pm

Is there any weakness in our game so far that we will look to address through trade,MLE, or draft?

The only major free agent departure we have is Wally and I could possibly see us buying that Hornets pick and trying to replace him with Chase Budinger or in the second round with Danny Green with his improved 3pt shooting but better defense. Then if we still get the Hornets pick we can try and work on BJ Mullins if he goes in the early 20s or we can try and move up and take him in the teens.

But honestly we havent shown any glaring need now that Boobie has improved his play and our Bigs dont look so old but we do need to get younger upfront. I like some of the second tier guys who are unrestricted FA like Chris Wilcox, Brandon Bass, Ryan Hollins, and Zaza Pachulia who I can see being paired with AV until (and if) JJ takes off and is ready to play. So maybe we use the MLE on proven players in the frontcourt and we can use the draft for a wing and/or backup PG.

The Cavs need a youth infusion to the front line. They could use someone with strength and quickness so that they matchup better with LA and Orlando. They also could use a talented 2. While I like Delonte, we really do need some more height in our backcourt.

Right now with the way it looks, if we are going to let Joe and Wally walk and we dont resign anybody we have 5 open roster spots. I would see if we can split the MLE between Zaza and Hollins to get some youth in the frontcourt with both guys being 24 and Zaza being a proven contributor but Holiins being a potential shotblocker. Then If we can buy that NO1st I would use these picks:
NO pick: Chase Budinger
Cavs 1st pick: Danny Green(since he has been climbing and doesnt look to be there and our early 2nd)
Cavs 2nd: AJ Price or Jodie Meeks

Roster:

Mo Williams/ Daniel Gibson/ AJ Price
Delonte West/ Aleksander Pavolovic/Danny Green
Lebron James/ Chase Budinger
Anderson Varajao/Ben Wallace/ JJ Hickson/ Darnell Jackson
Zydrunas Ilgauskas/ Zaza Pachulia/ Ryan Hollins

I think Pavs backsup the 2 and 3 until Green and Budinger can contribute. I think Green will crack the rotation before Budinger because his defense is better but Budinger's BBall IQ is very high so Brown may be able to get his defense to fit Cavs system. We are now frontloaded but this would be in expectation of a hopeful Bosh trade: Bosh/Kapono for Wallace/JJ Hickson/Pavs/1st rder/cash.

I really like the idea of Zaza, either as an addition to our team or in place of AV (if he asks for a ridiculous amount of money). Many people look at his stats and see he doesn't average much, but realize he doesn't see all that many minutes. When he averaged 31.4 and 28.1 minutes he averaged 11.7 ppg/7.9 rpg and 12.2ppg/6.9 rpg, respectively. Also, he's two years YOUNGER than AV. I think he is a very real option as a center for our team for years to come if we can get him (and fairly cheaply too). Averaging 30-32 minutes, I could definitely see him getting 13/8 in our system. One knock against him is that he doesn't have a good jumper, though. I do like big guys who can slide out when lebron drives and hit a J. Either way, I would be very happy to get him. Youth, experience, energy. I like that combination.

I like that plan a lot. I don't know if I would go after Hollins, but I wouldn't mind it. I would really hope that one of the SG's drop (not sure if any of them will but I could see a couple possibilities) and pick them up with NOH's pick and then go after a SF with our pick, but your plan works if guys go according to the mocks.

I liked Hollins because he has been somewhat of a productive player since he played under Carlise, a defensive coach. If he got production like that out of Hollins who until this year sat out of the rotation in Charlotte. Against us he played big minutes and played pretty well with Dampier in foul trouble. I think Brown could get more out of him and his age and size fits.

And the thing about Zaza is totally on point. That is why I wanted them to trade for him last year. But him making 4 mil, I think he would get a similar deal and Hollins making 700,000 may command up to 2 mil. I think we can sign them both for the MLE. And if not we can always bring Joe Smith back.

I would love Zaza.

I think we need to make a bigger splash in the offseason though. Lebron will want to see we have a core that can compete for multiple titles before he resigns, and teams will be looking to shed payroll.

The odds are in our favor to pull off another lopsided Mo-type deal and I think Ferry will have to take some risk and pull the trigger. We need a replacement on the frontline for Z.. Our front line is getting up there in age.

Zaza would be great.
We need to resign andy, maybe 4 years 35 mill?
Get Joe Smith back too.
I would think about Wally too.

I just like our team, we need to trade up I think and nab a good big man prospect.

PG Mo / Gibson / West
SG West / Sasha / Wally / Kinsey
SF LeBron / Wally / Sasha
PF Varejao / Joe Smith / Hickson
C Big Z / Ben Wallace / Zaza

Then trade Wallaces expiring for picks in the future.

Cavs Must a find a true back up point guard to mo, Then draft a big for the front line, And pray that fegan and ferry patch things up so Andy can be resigned. They still won't a title this year i dont think, but they will at least make it to the finals and not get swept like they did in 06-07.

Yes, Andy is a must resign... I don't know if we reall fine a quality draft pick to make a real difference for next year unless we can fine a way to draft up...Sasha, Gibson, Wally Kinsey, and even Big Ben should be considered for trade bait IMHO....
