Thompson and Irving

Post#1 » by darbstar » Wed Jan 18, 2012 12:56 am

Hi all,

Living in Australia I don't get to see the cavs play, we only get to watch the same teams play all the time i.e Lakers, Thunder, Dallas, Heat

I want to know:
1.) thoughts on Irving and Thompson??
2.) after what you have seen would you have still selected them 1 and 4?
3.) Is it time to increase Thompsons minutes?
4.) have they met or exceeded your expectations?
5.) what do you see for their futures in the NBA?

thankyou

I think they have both exceeded expectations in their own way, mainly because I don't think Cavs fans knew much about either of them coming into the season.

Irving is extremely polished for a 19 year old PG and should be one of the top tier PGs sooner rather than later. His finishing around the hoop is amazing and he has a great feel for the game and should only get better. I am amazed at how good he looks this quickly.

As far as Thompson goes, he is less polished, but still producing and showing strong potential. He's a fantastic shot blocker and explosive leaper, one of the fastest leapers I've seen. His offensive game needs work, including his free throw shooting, jump shot, and general feel for the game, but the foundation is there where you can see him putting it together.

I think Grant did pretty darn good with our picks in a pretty weak draft.

I too am from oz.

1). Irving has been fantasitc,

Positives - Hes a great decision maker, runs the point well, very capable scorer and his jump shot is very nice. He's been better than expected as of now, seems like a very mature high IQ player.

Negatives - Turns the ball over a bit much and gets beaten off the dribble sometimes too often but he isnt a bad defender

Thompson,

Positives - Already a very good defender both man and help, great hustle player. Great attitude, plays hard, wants to learn. Quick first step and can get to the line. Very strong around the rim already.

Negatives - Poor free throw shooter and very limited offensive arsenal.

2) Yes Kyrie is absolutely the number 1 pick. Tristan, well its yet to be seen with Jonas, maybe that was a mistake who knows. I'm very happy to have tristan though.

3) Ah i dunno, maybe slightly, no need to rush things. As crappy as Jamison is we need his scoring.

4) Being from oz i never saw these guys play in college so didnt know what to expect only from what i read but kyrie has definantly exceeded my expectations /hopes so far.

5) Bit early to tell for me, Kyrie could becomre a very, very good player. Thompson is pretty raw, im not sure how far he can take his offensive game but he can be a very good defender in the leauge.

Irving has been good, and so far worthy of the pick.

Thompson, as expected, is a bit of a project. Wildly athletic with a ton of potential, we just need to see how bad he wants it.
Its going to be tough to get him more minnutes with Jamison on the team. I think there's some combination of Coach Scott legitimately trying to win and the organization trying to showcase Jamison that is going to limit Thompson's minutes for a while.
