Free Agents We should target this year

Post#1 » by kiwibrindle » Mon Jun 2, 2014 11:45 am

We all know that our guards are the teams only strength we need a starting 3 4 and 5. We have the number one pick overall that may take a year or two to start (except if Parker is taken who is the closest to ready now but his Dee sucks). So I took a look at the top UNRESTRICTED 3, 4 and 5's that could be had with enough Casino/Quicken money.

At the bottom is my wish list and why:

Deng
Gasol
Zbo (play option but unresticted)
Gorgot
Ariza
Hawes
Marion
McRoberts (play option but unresticted)
Blatche (play option but unresticted)
D. Grainger
Humphires
Diaw
And many more not worth mentioning.

I really think the way to play this off season is to have one of those "Miami behind the scene meetings" with a few players that should make us go after bigs with value and know each other.

I say sign Zbo and Gasol this offseason and next year go after Marc Gasol. With his former team mate and friend plus his brother signed we should have a real shot. Plus Miami's weakness is there lask of quality bigs.

The only other guy I would consider going after is Gortat. He looked great in the playoffs. Not sure who else is worth the money on the list. And I'm not saying Pau Gasol is worth the money but getting his brother here is worth the downpayment.

Those three bigs here eventually and our talent at guard and Wiggins would be sick. The bench would not be bad either.

IV/ Jack/ Delly
Waiters/ Karasev / trade TT for a shot at Gary Harris
Wiggins/ Cleanthony Early / Felix
Zbo/ AV / Bennett
Gasol / Zeller / AV

That's the second best team in the East in 2015

Along with our guard play, I think our front court depth is also a strength. Unfortunately, if we go out and get a veteran PF and C, the development of Bennett, Thompson, and Zeller will be stifled. What I would like to see the organization do is go after a veteran starting caliber SF. This should allow us to bring Karasev off the bench, where his shooting could really help to open up the floor for the second unit.

-Paul Pierce, we can offer him more money than he is worth, but a 3 year deal with the third year being a team option. Will he want to come here? Probably not.

-Danny Granger, similar reasoning to Pierce, but the big question is whether or not he has anything left in the tank. In Cleveland, Granger could focus on defense and hitting open shots given he would not be relied upon to create often.

-Trevor Ariza, Ariza would be preferable given his age, but I feel whomever inks him to his next deal may regret it. Yes, Ariza looked great in the Playoffs, the thought of having an athletic SF to defend the opposing team's best player would be ideal. He was also knocking down shots, and even creating a bit. However, Trevor is an average starter, and anything more than $7-8 million should be considered an overpay.
Well at least we're not Detroit!

I don't know why we would target PFs who weren't a clear upgrade. We have plenty of middling PFs on the roster already.

Jarret Allen isn’t winning you anything. Garland won’t show up in the playoffs. Mobley is a glorified dunk man. Mitchell has some experience but is a liability on defense. To me, the Cavs are a treadmill team.

That's like the tallest dwarf claiming to be the second tallest after a giant.

NBA fan comes in peace.

Deng
Gasol
Zbo (play option but unresticted)
Gorgot
Ariza
Hawes
Marion
McRoberts (play option but unresticted)
Blatche (play option but unresticted)

Just talking shop and sharing my view so if you don't like what you hear, please don't over react. I don't mean any harm. Just giving you an NBA CLE outsiders view.

To me, I think the Cavs do best by drafting Embiid. That's a corner stone piece that you can always fall back on and it would anchor a team that needs some anchoring. And if Kyrie is thinking of leaving, you can always grow from a solid center base. And by getting Embiid, you increase the chance of Kyrie staying. A guard likes nothing more then knowing the post is taken care of. So I have CLE drafting Embiid. Its a win win. Parker and Wiggins are questions and they would only further complicate things on that roster. Embiid would anchor it.

As for what FA they can attract. Just my personal opinion, but I don't think many will view CLE as their first choice right now. Not players that want to win now and have better options. Now if CLE made the playoff last year, weren't coming into a new coach and had a more clear plan, that would be different but as is, I expect Deng and Hawes to go elsewhere. There are to many team with money that are better that would want them. And I don't see many on that list above coming short of many Blatche, maybe Granger and Humphires. Its more likely you get players by trading for them or taking on bad contracts. Kind of like the Wizards had to do to get Trevor A/Okafor and Nene. I'd give Bennett another year with a clean slate and reevaluate from there. But long term. Its not likely you keep three #1 picks. Its just to expensive. That's going to have to get cleaned up eventually.

I think CLE resigns Varejao. Drafts Embiid. That give you.

Kryrie/Jarrett Jack
Waiters/Sergey Karasev
Bennett/Alonzo Gee
Tristan
Embiid/Varejao/Tyler Zeller

And they are still only at like 32,044,677. They have money to spend just to reach the min.

I say CLE should go after Isaiah Thomas. Grab him while you can and maybe play Kyrie at SG some. And they get a fall back plan if he wants to leave. Then..

Danny Granger might be someone they can get. Not sure what his agenda is right now.

Maybe try from Jordan Hill or Elton Brand.

Or try to take on a bad contract. And definitely go after Carlos Boozer if CHI amnesties him. Actually, that should be at the front of the list.

That about what i see in the cards.

Kryrie/Isaiah Thomas
Waiters/Jarrett Jack
Bennett/Sergey Karasev/Alonzo Gee
Tristan/Boozer
Embiid/Varejao/Tyler Zeller

If they could do that, I would call that a good off season. That would give Embiid and Bennett the best chance to get better and give you a fall back plan at PG. Get through the first year of the new head coach and show something, then come back to make more moves next off season.

And they might be able to add Granger, Jordan Hill or Elton Brand if you don't get Boozer, but if CHI amnesties him, CLE should be able to out bid everyone. Boozer would be great for that team. They need to add some solid vet to balance the youth and teach them.

No doubt,

But since lots of players are all about the dollars and Gilbert has lots, WTF. You may get some of these types to Cleveland.

Yes it will be difficult to attract selfish me first humans that have been brought up to care about themselfs here their whole lives. True

It should be stated to all FAs we embrace players of all sports that play here:
Drug addicts: Josh Gordan
Sex addicts: Jose Meza
Crazies: Joey Albert Bell
etc.

I still don't understand how we're supposed to get Marc Gasol on the team when there's money going to Z-Bo, Pau, Kyrie (extended or re-signed), Jack and possibly as many as 5 first round picks.

Pau might come to Cleveland if the price is right (read: too much), but Marc is not going to take the vet minimum to play in Cleveland. That would be ridiculous.

I'd say either draft Wiggins and target Gortat or draft Embiid and try to get a reasonable contract for Ariza. Or see if we can extract Gordon Hayward from Utah.

Or just re-sign Hawes. I actually liked him.

Re-sign Hawes anyway.
And, Kiwi.... man, just relax, its only sports, you seem like a cool guy but you get so worked up over sports. I have been following Cleveland sports for 40 plus years and want to see a championship before I go, but its just a distraction from all the everyday BS we all have to deal with isn't it?
