Re: Around The NBA
Didn't even know Niang had a podcast, but some cool insight on what its liked to be traded as an NBA player
00:00 to 12:40 talking about being traded and what went down and the process in between
12:40 to 16:00 talking about forming a bond with a new team
16:00 to 20:00 co-host kinda poo-poos on Cleveland for the trade, but Niang understands they are trying to beat Boston and Cavs think Hunter brings the scoring and defensive size to get it done (doesn't say he agrees or doesn't, but p mature lol)
20:00 on seems likes general trade deadline talk that I switched off bc I don't need to hear their thoughts lol
Apparently he's had Tyson, Merrill, Garland, and TT on the pod so may check out those episodes.

Man, Nance Jr. is hurt again. He's out six more weeks.

Wemby being out means Evan is in the DPOY running, which if he wins would trigger the contract escalator to a 30% cap hit next year.

Its hard to be both for and against Mobley winning DPOY. Obvi he deserves individual success, but him winning really hampers us competing in the near future
They really need to change the CBA to allow players doing well and earning these elevated contracts to not affect the team's cap

FROM SHAMS:
The Memphis Grizzlies are signing forward Lamar Stevens to a 10-day contract, Mark Bartelstein of @PrioritySports and Greer Love told ESPN. Stevens is in his fifth NBA season and has played for Motor City of the G League after attending Pistons training camp. https://t.co/gKdbm4yMZx

If I'm a Cavs rival, I'm definitely voting for Mobley just to put apron pressure on us. Honestly, for all the improvement he's had on the offensive end this season, there's been some slippage on the defensive side of the ball. I've seen him put his hand up late on a number of occasions (vintage K. Love style) and he doesn't always expend enough effort in pursuit of the defensive rebound when Allen is contesting. There's been some resting on that end this season.

The DPOY award is voted on by 124 media members, there really shouldn't be anyone with ill intentions in that group.jbk1234 wrote:ijspeelman wrote:toooskies wrote:Wemby being out means Evan is in the DPOY running, which if he wins would trigger the contract escalator to a 30% cap hit next year.

The Cavs actually currently have zero rivals. Magic fans hate us bc they lost to us. Knicks fans hate us bc they beat us. Outside of that, i don't see any true rivalries for the core players or the new head coach.
Maybe jb personally wanted to guide us to another mediocre season, so he has a personal vendetta against the franchise.
None of those would be enough to sway their local media market, if at all.

You could say the same for the West with JJJ. Competitive votes probably cancel each other out. (Although maybe you vote Evan for DPOY and JJJ for All-NBA to get them both.)
Aren't the voters here all media members, though?

Some "slippage" is to be expected because of the difference in emphasis between Atkinson (offense) and Bickerstaff (defense), but IMO Evan has been fantastic on the defensive end game in and game out and he's a deserving candidate for DPOY.
You also can't look at Evan without taking in to account Jarrett. Few other bigs share the floor with another high-level defender and rebounder. Even in Milwaukee with Lopez and Giannis, one seems to focus on rim protection and the other on rebounding. If OKC's two bigs can stay healthy, they'll make a good comparison.
Jarrett deserves quite a few votes himself and usually that would be problematic because of vote splitting, but it seems the media is for the most part realizing it and has just decide Evan is the guy. If not Evan, JJJ could win it all or perhaps this is a year the voters will throw a bone to one of the standout wing defenders? Interestingly, no player has repeated as player of the month so far, not even Wemby.
Lastly Evan has a lot of deterrence value which is hard to quantify let alone compare, but a lot of players are going to pass the ball rather than try to challenge Evan.

I think the Cavs' DRTG is significantly higher with Evan on and Jarrett off than the other way around. At least this year, Evan has a strong statistical case over Allen that he hasn't had in the past.
I haven't seen the full rim protection stats from this year but JJJ doesn't have a huge blocks advantage over Mobley this year like he did two years ago. JJJ's lack of defensive rebounding will be a real argument against him.

Good on Nance for signing with the 76ers, he'll probably be elevated and immediately see playing time with Drummond and Embiid out.
When he's down with Delaware, he'll see time with his former teammate, Brobley.
Edit: oh wow, Patrick McCaw is on Delaware too, forgot that dude even still hooped.
That was short lived, he's back with the Charge.
Welp, back to Philly/Delaware he goes.
Not the Nance brother you all were hoping to hear info on today BUT Pete on the move again, headed to the Bucks on a two-way.

The Hawks have done us enough favors I suppose. Pelicans handed us some much needed depth too.
I suppose if we can afford to keep all 15 slots filled for the rest of the season with a g-league guy, it was going to be Tomlin not Pete.

Pete isn't going to be playing in the playoffs, and if he would be then we'd be in trouble. I'm happy he's getting paid somewhere.
I'm much more bullish on Tomlin's chances of turning into a pro with his late start playing basketball. And when I say that, it's only like 10% that he becomes an NBA rotation player, but for Pete I think that number's like 2-3%.
Is it today or tomorrow that is the last day for buyouts?

I think technically tomorrow but if waivers take 48 hours, wouldn't it really have been yesterday?
Maybe if the player submits the buyout paperwork by March 1st, then he retains his playoff eligibility. I'm unsure.
Either way, there does not seem to be very many candidates for spot 15 out there.
Cavs have $886,154 below the luxury tax, so essentially any vet is available for a prorated vet min, i think.

Probably doesn't need to clear waivers. They're probably off the original team's roster immediately so things like trades can be processed while waiving players to open roster spots.

That's true and PJ Tucker was just waived and will retain his playoff eligibility (i don't want him but just an example).toooskies wrote:JujitsuFlip wrote:toooskies wrote:Is it today or tomorrow that is the last day for buyouts?

I'm in favor of keeping spot 15 open for 14 days after Tomlin expires tomorrow just to see if anything around the globe frees up.

We have no obligation to fill spot 15, Green gets us to the the minimum. But the next 10 days should have some cupcake matchups.
