I'll just say that you should never pick a player that you have no idea how to use, even if his upside is greater than another player's. You have to know what you want certain players to do in your offense, not stockpile talent that can't mesh.

Pistons fan here.

IMO, you guys have to draft a great defensive center. TT looks like an excellent player to me. Combine him with a great rim protecting center, and that allows you to justify running Kyrie out there. Without that, as great as Irving is, he plays no defense at all and you guys won't be much of a threat to go anywhere in the playoffs.

In retrospect, the Cavs made a big mistake not drafting Drummond.

Someone already posted stats that show Irving is improving his defense, so you and others need to find a new talking point.

We can do the in retrospect too, the Pistons shouldn't have wasted their cap on CV and Gordon, who was dumped with a pick. They shouldn't have given away Amir or Afflalo, they shouldn't have tried to make AI work.

We've heard this garbage enough, we get it, the Cavs should be:

Knight
Overpaid treadmill veteran
Barnes
Williams

The 2012 draft is over, who we should of taken is water over the bridge. Dion is on this team & is a very good part. Kyrie, Dion & Shaun ( show me a team in NBA with better PG's ) top 3 at least. We just need to keep adding pieces. 2014-2015 we will be talking about winnig not who should have taken.

I really don't agree with this. Its a pretty fine line to me and unless there's a massive disparity in talent (dion isnt that) i dont see a problem in drafting for need. At least trade down.

Just look at minny, The Derrick Williams pick which made no sense. Even though he was seen as the second most talented at the time he was never gonna replace love and his value had no where to go but down. Now hes another wasted pick for them with little value.

Derrick Williams wasn't going to pan out no matter how much playing time or what kind of role he got, he fits in that tweener Michael Beasley mold, coming out he wanted to be a 3, they made him play the 4, but he was thought to be a 3.

I remember him saying something like, if Cleveland drafts me I'll replace LeBron, or something dumb like that.

He was thought to be a small forward.

What Minny should've done is went with Kanter.

Well thats another debate and i agree with you but they drafted for what they thought was talent instead of need.

I don't know if one way is right or wrong i think you can go right and wrong with either. I think if the talent disparity isnt too great you go with need and/or trade down.

I would love Victor Olidipo from Indiana with our second pick.

We need the Lakers to make the playoffs to get him, but I'd like him too if we can't get Otto Porter.

Maybe down the line Oladipo would start and Waiters would be the 6th man.

Now. Why would we do that?

SaiCLE- I don't agree with the idea, but I think they're suggesting that because Oladipo has a more complimentary game when it comes to playing off of Kyrie than Dion does, and Dion would make a great 6th man/ leader of our secondary offensive unit. Oladipo is shooting up the draft boards quite fast, and for good reason- but there are still numerous flaws in his game, and aside from that... he won't be there when the Lakers are picking IMO. Waiters is far more talented than Oladipo, not even close really. I still want to grab Shabazz with our first pick and try to snag a project 3/d wing (emphasis on the "d") as a bench glue guy down the road. We need to add some defensive firepower (preferably young, too) over the next few years, they'll come in MAJOR handy when we're competing again...I envision a Bruce Bowen-esque project (Bowen himself was undrafted), think of his importance during the Spurs title years.

Oladipo would add lockdown defense on the perimeter and be a serious weapon in transition for Kyrie, who is turning into the best transition passer in the league.

Waiters is the perfect player to have on the court when Kyrie is in, and to this day we haven't really seen games where both Kyrie and Dion are having good games together.

In order to make having Dion and Kyrie on the same team work, we may have to see them play limited minutes together.

It's too early to be thinking about drafting another shooting guard when his name is not Ben Mclemore, even then I rather draft a center with our pick and draft a 3 and D small forward( some one like Otto Porter)
Waiters is improving on moving without the ball, sometimes he gets caught standing behind that three point line, not sure if that is the offense or just him. Either way they are both young, and deserve a chance to play as much as possible with each other( chemistry doesn't grow on trees)

I understand that. But I'm not sure I would bench Dion for a guy just because he can play off the ball at the moment. I really think Shabazz is overrated, I'm a bit bias manly because I badly want a center, because I'm tired of seeing Zeller :-?
But I agree with drafting a 3/D guy.

Yeah, I've been starting to come around to Otto Porter, personally. He's exactly what this team needs at the 3... also, I'm starting to agree with the Muhammad is overrated idea... he'll be a solid player don't get me wrong, but he's nowhere near as skilled and versatile as his hype suggests. I think as Dion continues to improve his efficiency, as well as his chemistry with Kyrie in the starting lineup, the notion of him being a sixth man will evaporate. I have a love/hate thing goin on with this draft class, they are all very flawed in the top 5... reading through my past posts I just have to laugh at how often my opinion has been shifting on this draft. I just hope we stay away from the C prospects, Zeller and Noel scare the crap out of me as Cs at the next level.

If I'm Chris Grant, the pick will be between Muhammad and Bennett, this team needs defense too, so Noel could be an option, even Porter if you fall off the top5 (unlikely).

Both Muhammad and Bennett would fit right in, Bennett especially with Tristan and Varejao.

So who has the most favorable advanced stats in the upcoming draft class?
Well at least we're not Detroit!

Here's a good site to bookmark. It had Dion ranked as the #3 player headed into the draft last year and Tristan as the #2 the year before:

http://hoopsanalyst.com/blog/

Current top 10:

1. Nerlens Noel, C Kentucky
2. Victor Oladipo, SG Indiana
3. Otto Porter, SF Georgetown
4. Isaiah Austin, PF-C Baylor
5. Steven Adams, C Pitt
6. Willie Cauley-Stein, C Kentucky
7. Cody Zeller, PF-C Indiana
8. Kyle Anderson, SF UCLA
9. Michael Carter-Williams, PG Syracuse
10. Anthony Bennett, PF UNLV

We better not draft Cauley-Stein. And Bennett? Isn't he like 6'7 in shoes and a PF?

He says he wants to play "shooting guard or small forward" in the nba, he's also 250+
