I'm slowly warming up to the pick. I just think that we should have traded down if we wanted him. we could have done something like #4 for GSW #7 and #30

A steal at #4? So are they implying if Beal and MKG were available they would still pick Waiters? Lol.

Wow. Your opinions are SO interesting. Really, I love reading all of the things you think about the Cavs. It's probably your positive attitude about everything that makes your posts so enjoyable.
Seriously though, can we let the kid play a game before we judge him? He was the best player on that Syracuse team and he can put the ball in the basket. Something we need badly. Could we have traded down and still gotten him? Probably and personally I would have rather seen that, but we didn't. I'm happy with the pick.
They obviously spent a lot of time following this kid. TT was a weird pick last year and he's shown flashes of being a really good player. Let's see what he can do before we start throwing him and Grant under the bus.

NBA GM's are quoted as saying that if there was a 1-on-1 tournament among all of the guards in the draft, Waiters would dominate. Best scorer in the draft. The dude is a bulldog. The pick went from owning me to making me excited. He will bring passion to this team. 4 of our 5 positions in place. Zeller is the perfect compliment to TT. We are missing a wing and we're ready.

I agree with this 100%. This pick will look better 2 years from now when Drummond has been traded for spare parts and Barnes is the 8th man on a 24-win team. Not huge on Waiters but he fits needs and has a high floor.

He has comparable size to Beal.
BTW we gave up 24, 33, 34 for 17. Would you rather have Tyler Zeller or Jared Cunningham, Jae Crowder, and Bernard James?
Yeah, Zeller every time.

Yeah, steal. Get ready for DW3. He's a pitbull. The backbone this team needed.

Re: Waiters?
I think its hilarious this is a reach.
Reports are that Golden State and Portland would have taken him if he was on the board. Drummond went to 9. So really if we didnt take him he would have got taken ahead of the guys who this board thinks was good value.
Sports are changing guys. The teams run by guys who understand statistical and economic analysis and strategy are the ones succeeding in all 4 major sports. We are one of the those teams. Its not like the 70s where you take the big name and call it a day.

The Cavs FO think they got Dwayne Wade, so let's see how it pans out. Like I said, this is a home run or a disaster that sets you back years, there is no middle ground.

Re: Waiters?
Whole lot of justification going on in this thread this morning, lol. Waiters was going to be a top 10 pick, so he's not an aweful player or anything, but....
We did reach.
He is undersized.
He's not a great fit with Kyrie.
...this was not a good pick for us.

I'd rather they pick a player they think can be great than the one they think has the fewest flaws... In this draft it was Davis, mkg, beal, waiters... I'm okay passing on Barnes, Lamb, and Drummond as all are seriously flawed players in one or more parts on their games... TRob would have been nice, I'm a firm believer in drafting talent, as you can always trade good players who don't fit for pieces that do, not so much the other way around.

Re: Waiters?
Come on, dude. Don't you think Grant was working the phones for the last week trying to do exactly that? I'm sure his second call was to GS (right after Portland).fart wrote:I'm slowly warming up to the pick. I would bet a lot they were trying to move down, but they obviously couldn't find a taker for the #4 pick. The Cavs, for better of for worse, had Waiters on their board as the second or third best prospect--- were they supposed to pass on him at #4 for somebody they thought worse just because of what other people thought? You try to trade down so that you can get your guy and get some other assets. If you can't trade down, you take your guy, don't worry about the backlash, and move on. I might disagree with the Cavs' love for Waiters (but what do I know?) but I can't argue with the fact that they took the guy that was first on their board.
My biggest question is what happened to Charlotte? They knew we wanted Beal but they obviously wanted Kidd-Gilchrist. I guess they thought Washington would take Kidd-Gilchrist? Otherwise, why not take the Cavs offer, acquire some extra assets, and still get your guy at #4?

Re: Waiters?
I am OK with this draft.
Waiters was rated number 4 like Tristen Thompson (previous draft) using advanced statistics that ESPN's Hollinger uses... Cavs FO is heavily into advanced stats. After MKG and Beal were gone, I wasn't that surprised they selected Waiters.

I wanted MKG, Barnes or Beal but got Waiters.
I'm excited about the draft even though we didn't get one of those guys. Waiters could be a great scorer next to Kyrie. And we badly needed a SG as well as a C. Our starting 5 looks so much better after this draft.

Think Drummond should have been the pick.
4 Drummond
24 Jones III
33 Barton
34 Q.Miller
better than
Wiaters/Zeller

24 Jones III
33 Barton

Re: Waiters?
From the PD:
Q. Now that you know you're going to Cleveland, what is it about the organization that stands out to you?
DION WAITERS: Just the fan base, the crowd. They come to every game and they support the city, and it's a great city. I was there my freshman year and played in a tournament there. Calm city, quiet, things like that.
Q. And of course playing with Kyrie Irving ‑‑
DION WAITERS: I'm excited to play alongside my brother. I've known him for six or seven years, and we have been texting and talking forever. He was the first person that greeted me off the stage and gave me a hug and told me, welcome to Cleveland. That meant a lot to me.
