The Cleveland Cavaliers have fired coach Mike Brown, according to two league sources who have shared information with SI.com.

However, Plain Dealer beat reporter Brian Windhorst tweeted about the SI report that his sources are telling him Brown has not been fired as of this moment.

The Cavaliers finished with the best regular season record two years in a row, and it was Brown who guided the Cavaliers to the NBA Finals in 2007. Brown was also coach of the year last season

i have mixed feelings, i dont think he the worst...and i dont like Calipari...he seems like more of just a recruiter then coach...

but hey, im a CAVs fan and ill cheer the team no matter what direction they go in!

Honestly, Brown is probably one of the worst NBA coaches i have ever watched. Has no imagination as far as drawing up plays, players walk all over this guy, Player rotation are really bad, doesnt use time outs at the right times, and most of all is clearly not a motivator. He reminds me of a High School coach more then a NBA coach.

With a different coach the Cavs would have gone farther!

I just dont see this guy coaching in the NBA again. He will be a career assist coach at most.

+1. Who is next? who would you want to see as the next Cavs coach? I for one will be happy to see Brown go, he is not a top level NBA coach. Nice guy, good defensive coach, but not a motivator or good game day coach. We wish you well Captain Thorazine.
I will almost miss you sitting there after EVERY horrible call that goes against your team, mouth agape with your stunningly sharp glasses perched on your nose just so, lookin stylishly aloof and unaware of what is happening around you.
Fratello would be a good choice imo. He has shown he is able to adapt to his players and win without enough talent to actually do so. He had Nique in Atl so he can deal with superstars like Lebron (if he stays, otherwise Fratello wouldnt come here anyways), and his inbounds plays were superb when he was here last time, unlike Brown's that mostly resulted in turnovers and missed shots late in the shot clock. Just my 2 cents.

Brown had no strategy to deal with Boston double teaming Lebron and he was never able to integrate Jamison into the system. When Jordan used to get double teamed in the playoffs Pippen would have a huge game and make the other team pay. Jamison was almost non-existent while Lebron was being double teamed. Brown may have cost the Cavs their only chance of winning a championship if Lebron decides to leave because of this series.

The problem is Jamison has never been and never will be a Scottie Pippen type, rather he is a Tony Kukoc. The Cavs who coasted for the majority of the regular season, really lived and died with Lebron being superhuman (e.g. scoring a ton, facilitating the offense, rebounding, passing, etc) on a nightly basis. Just look at the trouble Chicago caused for Cleveland, the signs were there that this team could be defeated by a more disciplined and veteran team (e.g. Boston) which ended up happen. Mike Brown is NOT a good coach which is obvious to most, despite learning under Popovich. I really would like to see Lebron stay, but I do not believe he wants to go the KG route (when he was in Minnesota) and remain fiercely loyal while realizing that his cast of teammates will NOT get him a title. I do find it telling he somehow manages to insert he is loyal to Akron, which some might say gives him an "out" without feeling too bad.

In defense of Coach Brown

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy made a good point when asked about the firing of Brown Monday:

Why is it that more coaches from good teams are being fired than the coaches of bad teams?

“Mike Brown has only had the best record in the league the last two years,” Van Gundy said sarcastically after his team’s shoot-around Monday morning in preparation for Monday night’s Game 4 Eastern Conference finals matchup with the Boston Celtics. “I think it’s clear that the guy can’t coach.”

Then Van Gundy turned serious.

“It’s an interesting thing now,” Van Gundy said. “It doesn’t seem to be about winning and losing anymore, it seems to be about expectations. The non-playoff teams — other than Philly and New Jersey — they’re happy (with their coaches). Toronto, New York, everybody’s happy.”

Van Gundy broached the names of Brown, Vinny Del Negro of Chicago and Mike Woodson of the Atlanta — three playoff coaches who were fired after their teams were eliminated from the postseason.

“Mike Brown has been to the NBA finals and the Eastern Conference finals,” Van Gundy says. “It’s just shows how things have changed. I’ve always said franchises can and should be able to do whatever they want and whatever they think is in their best interest, but what I don’t like is the way a guy like Mike Brown is being portrayed. The guy is a great coach. His record has proven that.

“… I think one of the hardest things to do – in some ways even harder than winning a championship — is to win 60 games in this league. Mike has done it in back-to-back years. It’s a very hard thing to do to keep your team at that level night in and night out. He’s clearly one of the best coaches in this league.

“… They (Cavaliers) had a bad last three games of a series (with the Celtics.) And that’s the bottom line. If you’re firing Mike Brown, let’s be honest, you’re firing him based on three games. He’s been there five years and you’re firing him based on three games.”

Of course Van G has Brown's back. First, its a coach thing. Second, Brown gift wrapped the ECF for him last year by not playing straight up D on Orlando, and of course with his "great" rotations.
Like Michigan fans hated to see 1-10-1 Cooper go. Van G is one of my least favorite coaches in the league, but at least he knows how to work the refs, something that Brown seemingly never even contemplated. BTW, dont want his brother coaching here either.

Wouldnt it be funny (not really) if NJ interviews and hires Mike Brown and then Lebron goes there? I personally think it would make NJ a less likely destination for Lebron, but you never know, conspiracy theorists would have a field day with something like that.
