Shaq S&T for Marvin Williams?

Post#1 » by B Mac » Wed Jul 14, 2010 4:47 pm

According to David Aldridge:

Cavs trying to use Shaq to lure Williams

- The Cleveland Cavaliers' pursuit of Hawks swingman Marvin Williams centers at the moment on trying to convince the Hawks to do a sign-and-trade deal that would send Shaquille O'Neal to Atlanta, according to a league source.

The Hawks do have an interest in the 38-year-old O'Neal, who is not likely to return to Cleveland next season. But Atlanta has budget limitations after agreeing to give guard Joe Johnson a $124 million max contract, with ownership unlikely to approve a deal for O'Neal or any other backup center that goes much above the veteran minimum. The Hawks are also interested in free agent center Brad Miller and Bucks free agent center Kurt Thomas.

Cleveland got a $14.5 million trade exception by agreeing to a sign-and-trade deal for LeBron James to Miami, in addition to two future draft picks from the Heat. The Cavs could use part of the exception to absorb Williams's $6.7 million salary for next season.

Interesting. Marvin fits the mold of top pick who didnt fulfill his potential type of guy we were rumored to be looking at. He also would be a good fit in Scotts fast paced offense.

Thoughts?

I am interested in Marvin. I've said before that I feel Cleveland has a good opportunity to take a chance on someone, and I think he falls into that realm.
Well at least we're not Detroit!

I have no idea why the Cavs would be interested in Marvin Williams. He's not a good shooter and can't create for himself. He would be terrible here.

I might actually kill someone if we trade Marvin for an old ass Shaq.

Shaq isn't coming back. Period.

If we can get pretty much anything for him it would be a good deal. Marvin is young and a SF, which is a spot we have a gaping hole at. Good fit right now or not. It's a risk we can take and could pay off for us. I'm really hoping this gets done.

This is a no brainer for the Cavaliers. Hopefully we can get it done.

Being a Hawks fan, agree that the Cavs come out on top on this one. Shaq isn't coming back there.

Marvin is good for a contract year player; his numbers don't match the hype. Very surprised he got the salary he did after what I saw Bogut get in the same draft.

Marvin will be missed some because he is young and has some talent to help, but he won't get us to another level in the playoffs.

At this point I see Marvin as nothing more than a marginal starter at best. He really could have used another year or even two at NC. He is the type of player that the one year rule was made for, to keep ownership from overpaying someone right out of highschool after buying into all the hype.
And yes, the rule was made more to protect the owners than the HS players.

He was still averaging 14ppg on a team where everybody tries to get theirs ( JJ, Bibby, J-Smith, Horford), then they add chucker-extraordinaire Jamal Crawford and he drops to 10ppg.

If he's given the opportunity/possessions he could easly average 20ppg.

I could see 16-18ppg. He seems like he would be a good fit in the system Scott is trying to install. He is big, athletic, a good defender, as well as a decent shooter.

Late to this thread but I would be on board with this. We would have at the moment:

Mo/Boobie
Parker/Green
Marvin/Jawad
Hickson/Jamison/Powe
Varejao/Powe/Kahn maybe?

Not great but some good young pieces to build on.

Combined with an owner that is willing to spend and a coach that is looking to install a legit offensive system, I see this as being a more than decent starting point.

Marvin Williams is not a decent shooter, not sure where you got that opinion from. We must have vastly different views on what a 'decent' shooter is. He's not even a good shooter from 3 point or midrange in my eyes.

He's not a guy who creates for himself and the Cavs don't have a PG who can make things easier for him. Not to mention his contract is terrible for what he has shown over his 5 years in the NBA.

I'm thinking that one of the two teams want to attach more to the trade... not sure of that, just my thinking.

#Cavs & Hawks have talked but there's no sign-and-trade w/Shaq coming. Doesn't sound like either party is very interested now.
