Bennett and the D League

I have been told that if you have a player under contract, you can send them to the D League and you still retain their rights. Should the Cavs consider sending Bennett (and possibly Zeller) down so that they can get some run for 30 days or so? Bennett needs to get into shape, find his stroke and build his confidence.

No point in Zeller sending Zeller down, we need his minutes for the nights when Bynum sits. As for Bennett, I say keep him with the team, let him work himself into shape while learning the pro game.

I think he will have a breakout game soon and then it will be like night and day with him after that. Most players struggled as rookies and Bennett has been beset by more difficulties than usual (came in out of shape, didn't have the opportunity to practice much in the pre-season, shoulder injury, etc.) He is also getting very few touches when he has position as he plays with a second unit that likes to jack up shots (Miles, Jack, etc.) His current stats make him look like the biggest scrub of all time but he will be a decent player.

Confidence. He is at zero right now. They need to keep playing him. It will click...

He doesn't seem to know what he wants to do. The game appears to be moving too fast for him right now. But there is no way for him to get more comfortable than to play in the NBA not the D League.

Bennett at least looks competent with rebounding and boxing out. He just doesn't get many touches when he's in the game to to build up any confidence or find a groove. The fact that Mike Brown says he is a lot better on defense then originally thought is the best news we could have heard. His offense will come along.

Can I ask the question again? I think this guy needed another year of college. I'm not saying he is a "bust." I am saying he would be best served by a 30 day stint in the minors.

Why would you ask the question again, because no one agreed with the concept? Plus, you might want to at least attempt to explain why you think a stint in the D-League would server him well.

I wouldn't rule out the d-league for him, he's in way over his head.
Most importantly they just need to get him out on the floor. The Timberwolves game was I think the first game he got 20 minutes. They need to get him bigger blocks of playing time until his feel comes back. If you only think you have 12 minutes to give him for the night then play him 12 straight minutes, etc. There is plenty of roster flexibility to work around him.

The team sucks right now, so don't be surprised if Bennet won't put up the numbers you might expect from a #1 pick.
I remember back in the days Steve Nash fouled out in like 6 minutes and people were calling him a scrub and whatnot after that game - he somehow became a great player anyway. Don't give up on Bennett, he will find his place in the league...
