Just wondering what Cavs fans would say Thompson's trade value is. Is the general consensus that he's a bust?
Does he have any potential or pretty much maxed out on his ceiling?
What are his pros and cons?
As a Celtics fan we are constantly trying gauge the value of our young guys like Kelly Olynyk and Jared Sullinger.

Side question interest...If you've watched Sully and Olynyk (more than just highlights), would you consider both Sullinger and Olynyk entering their 3rd and second seasons as more valuable trade assets than Tristan Thompson?

Is he ultimately a career bench guy who didn't pan out right as the 4th pick who got some decent playing time while the Cavs were rebuilding?

No he's not a bust. He has more potential and we'll see if he does anything about that when playing for a winner. His ceiling isn't that high but he still has room to improve.

I haven't watched Sully or Olynyk, but they are probably worth more due to their lower salary and extra years.

Thompson was a good 4th pick for his year. Arguably better than the 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 13, 14, 16, 17 etc pick. Kemba, Leonard, Klay, Burks, Vucevic, Jonas are different, but you can't tell me that you know 100% that Tristan Thompson will be a worse player than any of them except Leonard or Klay at the end of this next year. Leonard is really the only standout of the group, and a weak standout anyways.

Other than Kyrie, it was a role player draft.

Tristan is a career bench guy compared to Love, but he's panning out well enough for a role player in a role player's draft.

His value is not any of those 5 options because his value will be largely affected by the situation of the trade.

If he was any of those we would've traded him to you instead of Zeller.

a) He's not getting traded.

b) His value will need to be re-appraised when he's playing for a functional team and he's had some time to learn how to shoot with his other hand.

c) I've always felt he was drafted to understudy to and eventually replace Andy Varejao on this team.

in fact only real shot blocker that any recent championship teams had was Tim Duncan. Tyson Chandler wasn't better shot blocker than TT/AV, nor was Andrew Bynum, nor was KG during the championship run.

I can't really compare a defensive PF to a high scoring point/shooting guard in Knight, but yes, I'll give you Vucevic, I'd def have him over TT, fit or not.

That would've been an amazing reach if we done that, if they think TT going from 7 to 4th is a reach, imagine going from 16 to 4, lol.

Erm well I think you could argue that Duncan, Garnett and Chandler would be included as real rim protectors/shot alteration artists... where as the Heat had Bosh who may be a slightly better defender than Bynum was in 2010.

All three of those guys won the Defensive player of the year and they are 7 foot tall.
Pretty big disparity between their line ups and the Heat.

Two observations: (1) The poll was tough because the Cavs are going to want a player back for TT and not a pick based on where they are at. (2) He's a blue-collar 10ppg/10rpg type whose defense is slightly above average. He's the best big coming off the bench a on good team and starting PF on an average one. If the Cavs could get a middling center who was a good shot blocker for him, they would make that trade.

I actually think it would be a mistake to trade him before finding out what he can do with actual NBA players around him.
And yes he's been a terrible shooter to this point - I'm not expecting him to turn into Love, but it wouldn't hurt to see if switching hands last year helps his game this year as well. There were positive signs from the foul line.
You have to allow players to develop. In just about all of Cleveland sports the proper time is never granted to the player.
Well find out everything we need to know about Tristan this season and can make a better decision after. That also affords some protection against Love not resigning and a better chance at getting a return in a sign and trade. He'd be worth more signed than he is now. And I doubt he or Lebron have a problem with him leaving for greener pastures at that point, but trading him now could lead to some smaller issues.

Is there any particular reason why his block numbers went down so drastically? In his rookie year, he blocked 1 shot in 23 mpg, now he is averaging just 0.4 bpg in 8 more minutes. And he was a pretty damn good shotblocker in college as well (2.4 bpg as a freshman in 31 mpg is pretty good).

The Mike brown system often brought him out of the paint this past year. Also, much of that rookie year he started for us at center because of varejao's injuries. He played a small center and he could help off ball for blocks, but often left wide open layups for the other team if they passed to the other big or cutting guard

It is clear that Mike Brown focused on positional defense and not shot blocking. None of his players are big shot block guys. LeBron is probably the best example, he could be a phenomenal shot blocker, but he's never had many mainly because his primary defense teacher was Brown. IMO

He'll never be a star in this league.

He's definitely a role player and with Kevin Love in the way on this team, he'll always be a back-up unless Blatt decides to go small.

Its being reported in Wiretap that Thompson wants an 11Mil plus per year extension, I say see you later Tristan. If this is true we can look to move him starting today.

To this point, Jonas has not shown a thing to say that he's better than Tristan.
