How would you rate these Cavs players so far this season?

Post#1 » by MixedUp » Thu Dec 11, 2014 10:43 am

I've been wondering as I haven't watched many Cavs games so far this season how you guys would rate these Cavs players so far this season?

You have to rate both the Offense and Defense seperately.

1 = very bad
2 = Bad
3 = Average
4 = Good
5 = Very good

You can rate with full points and half points. (For instance a rating of 3.5 is allowed, 3.6 NOT).

The players to be rated:
LeBron James
Kyrie Irving
Kevin Love
Dion Waiters
Tristan Thompson
Anderson Varejao

Rating a player can be done the following way:

Example:
LeBron James O: 4 | D: 3

Thanks guys, This will help me tremendously.

These ratings are now not a week ago

LeBron James O: 5 | D:3
Kyrie Irving O: 4 | D: 2
Kevin Love O: 4 | D:2
Dion Waiters O: 3 off the bench, 1 as a starter | D:2
Tristan Thompson O: 2 | D:2
Anderson O: 3 | D:3

Tough scale to work with without 'average' being further defined. Here's how I'd put them againt the league averag for their role.

LeBron James O: 5 | D:3
Kyrie Irving O: 4 | D: 3
Kevin Love O: 3.5 | D: 1.5
Dion Waiters O: 2.5 | D: 3
Tristan Thompson O: 2 | D: 3
Anderson O: 3.5 | D: 3.5

If its really a league avearage then the numbers go up because there are two backups for every starter on an NBA roster. I think a better measure would be performance against expectation. LeBron is going to get a 5 by any other meausure, but he's been off for large chunks of the season too.

Ill rate them vs their personal peak/potential not compare to rest of the league or eachother.

LeBron James - 3.9/3
Kyrie Irving - 4.1/3
Kevin Love - 3/2
Dion Waiters - 1.9/3
Tristan Thompson - 3.5/3.8
Anderson Varejao - 4/3.5

I was wondering why everyone thought that Tristan was playing poorly on offense. I disagree whole heartedly with that view.

I don't think he's playing poorly, but my rating is based on role. As the 3rd big, his production is light and there are games that he completely dissapears. There are reasons for both of those things, but that really speaks to what we're rating them against.

Tristan becomes a black hole at times. Once he grabs a rebound or receives a feed from someone, he gets tunnel vision and makes it his life mission to score, no matter how bad the shot attempt may be.

Now, this is something he is slowly improving, but the problem seems to surface every so often.

TT does not create his own shot. He regularly throws up bricks w/o touch. Recently there has been improvements in the overall offense due to our guards dishing so well but TT is weak on the O side.

I would still lead him for the right offer in a NY heartbeat.

He's weak on the offensive side, but he's also shooting 536 from the field so he's not really forcing a lot and he's clearly getting his baskets within the overall offense. Not to mention he's been a beast on the offensive boards late in games which has helped us tremendously late in games.

TT finds ways to score despite being offensively challenged. That he gets any points, due to his un-erring ability to throw the ball into the defender's hand, is a testament to his hustle and energy.

In terms of offense/defense:

LBJ - 4.5/3
Kyrie - 4.5/3.0
K. Love - 4.0/2.0
Dion - 2/3
TT - 3.0/3.0
Andy - 3.5/3

Now K. Love and TT have been rebounding well so they should get a bump for that. Kyrie gets docked for half a point for his tendency to go full shooting guard in games. LBJ gets docked half a point because he's been sloppy with the ball at times. K. Love disappears against bigger defenders on the inside. Dion has been bad. TT is playing good lunch pail basketball. Andy has been making the most of his opportunities offensively.

Not one Cavs has been an above-average defender on a consistent basis. LBJ has been a good defender at times but his effort is so inconsistent on that end I gave him an average score.

Jarret Allen isn’t winning you anything. Garland won’t show up in the playoffs. Mobley is a glorified dunk man. Mitchell has some experience but is a liability on defense. To me, the Cavs are a treadmill team.
