Game 15: Hornets @ Cavs 11/18/2022
If only Wade is out, I cannot say I agree with the Stevens start. Would rather Cedi be in there.
If spacing was an issue with LeVert or Okoro out there, Stevens is much worse from three.

That was my thought too, time will tell.ijspeelman wrote:

A lot of big to big passing and most of it is organic instead of being a set play. The duo of Allen and Mobley is so good defensively. They really pair so well.
JB always calls a small small PNR to end the half. I bet you he will do it again next game.

We need another spacer on the floor with our main 4. The Hornets are switching everything on picks and packing the paint at the same time and we have no way of countering without another shooter.

The Cavs get the least respect of any team from the officials of any team in the NBA. This will be another fun two minutes report.

Jarret Allen isn’t winning you anything. Garland won’t show up in the playoffs. Mobley is a glorified dunk man. Mitchell has some experience but is a liability on defense. To me, the Cavs are a treadmill team.

Welp. Overtime.
We played a really bad 4th, but it doesn’t help when it’s 5v9.

I'll say this though, even with poor officiating, you have to score more than 105 against the Hornets

And overtime 2.
I will say Hornets are super hot right now. I don’t think we are necessarily playing bad defense.

Re: Game 15: Hornets @ Cavs 11/18/2022
Hornets should not have been in this game or taken this to two overtimes so I cannot say I’m super happy with the win, but there were definitely things I liked.
LeVert showed up with defense and hustle when his offense was a non-factor.
There were a lot of three man plays at the top of the key with Allen, Mitchell, and Garland. They ranged in complexity and were some of our better offensive sets throughout the night. The plays would be much better if one of the two players in the corners could shoot above 30% from three.
Mobley attempted a three in the clutch and it didn’t go in, but I love the confidence. He’s currently shooting almost half the three point volume as last season. His percentage looks horrible, but he’s only taken 12 threes all season so who knows where it actually lies.
There are still some defensive kinks to iron out. There was a play near the end of the 4th or first OT where Mobley gets switch onto Rozier and Mitchell gets switched on Hayward. Rozier has to give up the ball to Hayward who cuts from the sideline. I don’t know JB’s defensive scheme, but I think Mobley does the right thing and pre switches onto Hayward, but Mitchell isn’t ready for it and follows Hayward as well leading to an easy Rozier three.
I decided to just clip what I’m talking about to make it easier. Mitchell seems to think it’s on Mobley so I don’t know what they’ve been told to do there, but it makes sense to me to just switch that action to nullify any advantage.
I continue to not love Okoro’s PNR defense. He just gets caught on a lot of screens and tends to force through them (not necessarily a bad thing because it shows you are trying to slip by, but I think he doesn’t pick them wisely consistently).
Quick JB criticism. Why aren’t Neto and Cedi getting more play time? I’m not saying Neto is very good, but he’s a good rotation guy to put in to get some guys rest. Cedi getting 7 minutes is wild. I just don’t like the basically 7-8 man lineup that JB insists on running. It’s the regular season and it’s okay to play 10 men every night unless you want guys playing a playoff style game against a good team.

The number of minutes that the starters play concerns me, both from the perspective of them wearing down prematurely & injury risk as well as not having a developed the bench properly.

The former concerns me. The latter does not.
Wade, Rubio, and Windler are injured (Windler perpetually so). Love, Lopez, LeVert, Neto, and Cedi are as developed as they're going to be. Stevens and Okoro might have a little more they can give, but not a lot. Isiah Mobley is a G League project.

Add Love to the injured list, unfortunately.jbk1234 wrote:KuruptedCav wrote:The number of minutes that the starters play concerns me, both from the perspective of them wearing down prematurely & injury risk as well as not having a developed the bench properly.

Re: Game 15: Hornets @ Cavs 11/18/2022
At the time I felt Mitchell messed up and didn't switch, but they should. communicate and while JBB isn't fond of switching it was an obvious situation to do so given how hard it's been for anyone to score on Evan.
