Do we really have a shot at Mike Miller??

Post#1 » by APW2914 » Sun Feb 3, 2008 6:49 pm

Referencing the Brian Windhorst article regarding Danny Ferry going after Mike Miller. Do we really have a shot? I personally think he would be great next to Lebron. He shoots over 50% from the field and 43% from the 3 point line. He is also a big body that can play some decent D. We would keep that huge starting lineup.

Mike Miller for Newble (expiring contract) and Sasha. Maybe we would have to throw in our first round pick.

Then next year we could trade our expiring contracts (Gooden, Snow, Marshall, D Jones) for a big, mean, finishing power forward and an above average point guard.

What do you guys think?

Here's something I cooked up with Smooth's post over on RCF.com.

Gooden
Pavs
Shannon
Ira

for

Miller
Navarro
Cardinal

http://www.realgm.com/src_checktrade.ph ... id=4465630

We'd have to take on Cardinal's ugly contract, but we'd also get two perfect fits for LeBron. The benefit for the Grizzlies is obviously both getting Sasha and getting rid of Cardinal's contract while getting back a couple of expirings. This deal of course swings on a few things:
- How much interest they truly had in Sasha
- How badly they want to dump Cardinal
- How much value Mike Miller has
- If they are willing to take Drew back

I don't see the Grizz wanting Drew Gooden back. Then again their GM just traded Gasol for trash, so who knows

Yea it all depends how badly they want to dump Cardinal. I imagine we'd probably have to ship them some cash as well.

Drew Gooden (1 more year)
Sasha Pavlovic (2 more years)
Shannon Brown (ending contract)
Cedric Simmons (1 more year)
Eric Snow (1 more year)
2008 1st Round Pick

for

Mike Miller (2 more years)
Darko Milicic (2 more years)
Kyle Lowry (ending contract)
Brian Cardinal (2 more years)

Cavaliers
C: Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Darko Milicic
PF: Anderson Varejao, Brian Cardinal, Donyell Marshall
SF: LeBron James, Devin Brown
SG: Mike Miller, Daniel Gibson, Damon Jones
PG: Larry Hughes, Kyle Lowry
IR: Ira Newble, Dwayne Jones

-We can afford to give up our 1st Rounder because we get two young guys at positions we probably would have used the pick on anyways in Lowry (PG) and Milicic (C)
-Get a shooter that we've been looking for in Miller
-Have to take back a bad contract in Cardinal, but look at the talent we are getting back

Grizzlies
C: Kwame Brown, Stromile Swift
PF: Drew Gooden, Hakim Warrick, Cedric Simmons
SF: Rudy Gay, Casey Jacobsen
SG: Sasha Pavlovic, Juan Carlos Navarro, Shannon Brown
PG: Mike Conley, Javaris Crittenton
IR: Eric Snow, Andre Brown

-Get four young guys in return (Gooden, Pavlovic, Simmons & Brown)
-Another 1st Rounder to add to their collection
-Cap space for next year and the future
-They can afford to trade Lowry because they just traded for Crittenton, and have no need for three young PG's (other is Mike Conley)
-Milicic hasn't panned out for them yet, but he's still a work in progress - I think they wish they could have gotten Varejao instead
-Gets rid of Cardinal's bad contract

I think it's more likely Ira is included if we made a deal.

Devin would even be more likely than Snow. That last deal isnt too realistic IMO.

break it up into smaller trades and we can send cash with each trade.

Sasha + Ira + $3 million for Miller

our trade exception or shannon + $3 million for a lower priced player as a separate trade or trades

Drew or Donyell + $3 million for either Darko or Cardinal as another trade.

i've been reading that Lowry is the PG Memphis would want to deal..

but swapping him for Navarro still works..

and it would works for me

I've also read that they REALLY want to move Cardinal..

with the team up for sale any salary they can dump seems to be the goal

Do you think Ferry reads this?

Sasha+Ira+Shannon doesn't work for miller ($14,000 too much for Cavs)

Try something like this:

Trade#1: Cedric Simmons, Sasha,Ira, 2008 1st rounder, $3million cash for Miller. (MUST do both trades for Cavs to agree to deal)

Trade#2(contingent on Memphis doing trade #1) : Donyell Marshall, Eric Snow, 2009 2nd round pick, $3Million Cash for Darko and Cardinal.

Why Memphis does this: Getting rid of Darko,Miller and Cardinal moves all their long-term contracts that are high$. They get back Sasha, who they covet, plus a first and second rounder.

Some may think that Memphis taking Snow and Donyell is a dream...but it is helping Memphis, not the Cavs.

The Cavs send 6-Million in cash over the two trades, paying for Snow's final year. Donyell makes less than Cardinal and his contract is shorter....PLUS they receive a second round pick.

The Cavaliers do this to get room on the bench and to get Miller + a 3rd big. Darko is a disappointment, but he will be able to play 15-20 minutes rotating with Z and sometimes at PF. Cardinal will take Snow's place rotting on the bench....unless he gets healthy again.

Finally, the Cavs are willing to take on the contract of Darko because Big-Z and him are both from Lithuania and are friends....and management believes that Darko will improve under Z.

The draft picks mean nothing. Every year teams sell their picks to the highest bidder. Look for the Cavs to be part of that game as well.

So to answer the thread's original question: Yes, the Cavaliers have a VERY good shot at Miller. VERY GOOD!!!

(Extra bonus: LeBron and Miller are friends since playing for the USA last summer....probably have some timing, etc already worked-out too.)

Honestly, if all it takes for Cleveland to acquire Miller is to take back a crappy contract, Ferry needs to be all over this deal like white on rice.

Mike Miller next to Lebron James would be an unholy pairing...

I cant see why Memphis would trade two expirings, one of which they just gave up their franchise player to get, for only one nonexpiring in return.

ANd I don't see why we'd trade Drew for Kwame, even if it brought in Mike Miller. If you think Drew has a low basketball IQ, just watch Kwame play.

Unless hoopshype has the salaries wrong, Sash + Ira for Miller works.

Sasha + Ira = 4,200,000 + 3,441,900 = $7,641,900

If we send that out, we can take 125% + 100k back, which is $9,652,357

Miller makes $8,250,000. We could take back Miller plus another player who makes under 1.4 million (Warrick, Crittenton and Lowry all qualify and are not expiring contracts). We can also send $3 million in cash. We could also take back that 2nd player with our trade exception. and send another $3 million in cash.

that would make a difference and that complicates things.

Damon + Ira does work, though
