Sam Cassell to be bought out - But does he goto C's or Cavs

Post#1 » by heathmalc » Fri Feb 22, 2008 12:43 pm

It is being reported that Sam Cassell and the Clippers have an agreement on a buyout.

For weeks it has been rumored that he would goto the Celts...but there may be a hitch.

The Cavaliers still have part of their MLE and LeBron has openly stated that he wanted him. To make things more complicated, the Cavs may let him start for them...which may interest Sam so he can get a new contract.

It's looking like it's 50-50 right now, we'll see who gets him.

How far does Gibson get pushed down the Depth Chart when Sasha Pavlivic and Varejuo return?

This is a tough situation, because it's gonna take some time incorporating these new guys into the lineup, so I don't know if we need a guy like Murray or Cassell yet.

Signing Cassell would be helpful if only to keep him out of a Boston uniform. Flip Murray wouldn't have a place on this team though.
Go Cavs!

If you guys sign Sam Cassell, you are officially the best team in the East. There is even no need to go on with the season. But I doubt he will do it, even though he can get the starting job. His ties with Garnett are still so close to this day, that he probably won't say no right into KG's face. He has also played with Ray Allen for 4 seasons.

You will be doing perfectly with Gibson and West. West was our starting SG last season, but he is a very good PG, as well. I think he should even start for you guys, and Boobie will come and bring in some hot shooting off the bench.

No need to go on with the season, P2. Are you serious. Isn't that why they play 4 months of playoff basketball?

As a matter of fact, the Cavs will have the best team with Cassell. I don't think we would be able to overcome the Cavs in a playoff series (which will probably be the East Semis).

No I am not an "insider." I know a few people who "sometimes" have info...but this isn't one of those cases. I

I heard about Sam Cassell on the radio. I looked on the rumor sites and checked everywhere else, but cannot find anything.

So for now, take this with a "grain of salt."

Besides... the people that I do know...I wouldn't quote them w/o a second source anyway, as they've made me look like an ass in the past.

Well, one thing we do know for SURE is this:

In order for a player to be eligible to play for a team in the playoffs, they MUST be on the team's active-roster by March 1st.

So that gives the Clippers and Sam a little more than a week to come to an agreement, and for Sam to sign with a team.

I don't see Cleveland OR Boston signing Sam if he can't be on their playoff roster.

Further, I dont see Sam accepting a buyout if he cannot goto a contender and play for another title.

So thats what we know "for sure." Everything else is just talk until then.

You said in this thread that you heard it on radio. So did you? Or do you mean your imagination by saying "radio"? Is it buzzing in your brain? Please tell me that you really heard it, because my hopes are sky-high right now.

This is what you posted:

Heath I congratulate you on throwing some very useful info out there. I for one wasnt aware about the March 1st deadline. Should be interesting to see where Sam I am ends up. I still gotta think Boston is in the lead, and I havent even heard anyone really even mention the Cavs yet, besides idle speculation.

The March 1st date is not accurate. Sam, or anyone else for that matter, has to be waived by March 1st to be eligible for the postseason. When they sign is apparently not an issue, though I would imagine playoff rosters have to be set at the end of the season.

This was most recently clarified by Henry Abbot on ESPN in relation to Barry rejoining the Spurs in 30 days.

He has to be waived by Feb 27 and has to sign be March 1 to be eligible for a playoff roster. Its takes 48 hours to clear waivers.
