First off congrats on being one of the biggest winners on the trade deadline. I come to you guys to ask a question. How much do you guys think Gibson will be getting in the open market? In addition, after the trade you guys made do you fell if the heat sent the full MLE at him you guys would match? Thanks and good luck!

We have his bird rights and can offer him more than anyone else and him and LeBron are absolute best friends (to a scary degree) so basically he is not going anywhere. Im not even sure if he can be offered the full MLE to be honest with you. Just not the way it works.

Him and LBJ have a
special relationship..
These are disturbing quotes from Boobie in a recent article:
Now they've become so close that Gibson mimics James

yeah Boobie is restricted..
don't get confused though..
Gibson does not have "full bird rights" but is instead an "early bird"..
after next season he will have full bird rights.
Gibsons contract can only increase up to the average player salary for the upcoming season. This year the average salary was slightly more than $5 million.
it's complex for teams signing him to a backloaded multiyear contract in an attempt to steal him..
while I can't see the Cavs not matching anything..
I can't see them not trying to save a few buck on him either..
it could be interesting
here's a good CBA site regarding player contracts:
you pretty much have to read the whole thing as there are many exceptions to the basic rules
pay close attention to the early brid section and/or the gilbert arenas provision section if you want to know about Gibsons contract status and another teams ability to steal him..

With all the recent moves making the Cavs one of the older teams in the NBA I don't see them allowing one of their young players walk.

I can understand resigning Gibson but what do you think will happen with Delonte West?
A combination of Gibson and Delonte manning the point isn't bad from a scoring standpoint but neither one of them are that good at running an offense.
If West and Gibson does become the Cavs' backcourt of the present / future that combo will do little to ease the playmaking load on Lebron.

I don't think the Cavs want a traditional point.. They want someone who can handle the ball a bit in the halfcourt, dribble penetrate and knock down some shots...
Delonte is more than capable... Boobie, not so much... Although, Boobie did show flashes of that in games 3 and 4 against Detroit.. He got to the line at will, but for some reason has never really worked on making that a staple of his game..
But at the end of the day, the ball needs to be in the hands of THE KING...

Gibson just needs to work on his dribbling ability (which seems like an odd thing considering he's a 6'2" professional basketball player). He's easily one of the quickest players in the NBA and if he just decided to drive there are few that could stop him. Not to mention I really like that floater of his.

I have no idea why people would think that we'd need to chose between Gibson and West. Why not both? They truly do bring different things to the table.

Thanks guys. I was just curious considering that you guys are close to the tax next year and a 6 million dollar deal may just cost you 12million.

We are close to the tax but have alot of expiring dollars as well - e.g. Snow, Wally, etc.
I think the current owner believes fielding a competitive team is more important than the luxury tax right now (keeps Lebron happy)

You have got to be out of your mind. Gibson would be lucky to get half of that. In fact I'm sure that he can't be offered anything that large this year anyway.

LOL If he wants that much he wont get it in Cleveland and he wont get it this summer. He would have to sign a one year deal and then become unrestricted next summer, because under the CBA he cant even earn that much yet.

Gibson won't get a full MLE offer from anyone unless he explodes in the post season.

I don't see teams throwing big bucks at Gibson, considering that the Cavs can match any offer, compounded by the fact that teams don't really have much money. Besides Philly, Minnesota, Memphis and Seattle, I can't think of any team with cap room to spare. Plus Elton Brand and Gilbert Arenas are on the market, as well as Ben Gordon. It's gonna be a buyers market this summer.

I wouldn't even give him the full MLE. Go with 2.5 million until he proves he can earn the money. Only quality starting point guards should receive a check like that.
