An All-Star is on the way

Post#1 » by Bamboozled » Wed Jul 2, 2008 5:14 pm

It seems that when a team trades away its best player, it's always looking to recieve all or part of the following items:

1. Cap relief to rebuild
2. A potentially good young player
3. A draft pick

Since Cleveland has $20 million in expiring contracts (Wally/Snow), a potentially good young player (Varejao), and a 2009 or 2010 draft to send out, the Cavs are on the verge of acquiring a very very good player. I don't think the trade is guaranteed to happen before the season starts, simply because the four best players (Brand, Davis, Arenas, J O'Neal) are off the market. But players become available during the year all the time (Pau Gasol), and the arforementioned package would have been enough to outbid the Lakers last year.
Go Cavs!

Obviously an all star is on the way. The Cavs have a lot of great trading pieces. Cavs fans need to stop listening to what ESPN says and just be calm. Things are going to happen in time.

Normally a team needs to send a ton of potential to bring back an All-star. More realistically, it takes an All-star to get one in return.

With 2010 being the free agent year that everyone is focussed on, one would think that contracts that expire in 2009 are valued less than contracts that expire in 2010. The only contracts the Cavs have that expire in 2010 are Ben Wallace and Pavlovic (plus Ilgauskas if he does not excercise his option to become a free agent in 2009). Those are the players to be coveted the most for their expiring contracts.

Teams that acquire contracts that expire at the end of this season are of less value to teams trying to clear space for the 2010 free agent extravaganza (that may or may not take place).

To be honest, it really doesn't make sense to say that contracts that expire in 2009 are of less worth than those that expire in 2010. As long as a team isn't using those contracts the expirings should be of the same value.

I guess I shouldn't have gotten everyone's hopes up with the title of this posting, but people seem to be looking at the Cavs situation more negatively than they need to. The Cavs roster is in pretty good shape; they addressed their aging big man problem by taking advantage of a big man heavy draft, they have a ton of cap space, and guys like Gibson and West will be better next year, as long as they get their contracts in place in order to avoid a Pavlovic/Varejao holdout scenario. Plus even if they can't unload Pavlovic, there's a chance that with a full training camp, he won't be nearly as terrible as last year.

Also, if a team is rebuilding, it shouldn't matter if they get cap relief in 2009 or 2010, as long as they don't blow it on magic beans like Jerome James or some other terrible player.

I meant expiring contracts, which are basically the same thing nowadays.

The Cavs don't have a lot of great trading pieces. They need to get lucky. They can provide cap relief, and that's it. They have late first rounders to offer, an average PG (Boobie) and a backup PF who is paid exactly what he's worth (Varejao).

This header says all star, not former all star. Miami can keep him. Only way I want him, is if he comes on the cheap.
With that being said, I don't see the Heat and Cavaliers as good trading partners.

Maybe the Wizards will realize that giving Arenas $111 million was a huge mistake and you can get him and Jamison for your expirings and Verejo...

Wouldn't surprise me one bit if Washington was sitting in the lottery (9th or 10th on the East) at the deadline.

Makes no sense, if Arenas is healthy the Wiz are a playoff team at worst. If he's not healthy no one wants him.
much respect to the 2011-2012 champions, Miami Heat, well deserved

Butler could be injured yet again... Arenas might not look the same coming back from injury... Jamison could start to decline.

A lot has gone wrong over the years... no reason to think all the stars align and all that talent finally gets them a top 4 seed in the east.

I think there is a legit chance that Washington will be floating around or just under .500 at the deadline and perhaps ownership realizes they didn't make the best $160+ million investment in those two players this summer.

yeah some great reporting there defently. sayign knicks could deal for wally but not what the would give up made me laugh hysterically. but yeah getting back on topic, all the all star players are basically off the block cept for vince c. (but the nets keep shooting down our offers). but we still could either sign some good bench players or trade for a non all start starter

I didnt see a trade thread so I thought I would just post this here... These guys arent all stars but I think this trade would make you guys better... I am not aware if your team is committed to waiting for cap space or not so please dont flame me.. this is just sharing a suggestion

Wally and Varejao for Dunleavy and Murphy

West/Gibson
Dunleavy/Pavlovic
James/Dunleavy
Murphy/Smith/Wallace
Illgauskus/Wallace

These guys both have 3 years left and expensive deals, thats why I said I dont know how committed you are to capspace but both have shown the ability to score the ball... Murphy has a piss poor shooting % but I think playing next to LeBron could boost it quite a bit... I think Dunleavy would be great next to LeBron and would give you around 18 ppg on 48%, 42% from 3.... If you could get 12 ppg and 8 rpg on 48%, 38% from 3 (or better) outta Murphy then I think you guys could really do well with this trade... You would still have Pavlovic and Wallace for defensive purposes... Perhaps start Wallace and bring Murphy off the bench? I know thats an expensive sub but it would be a nice scoring punch off the bench with Boobie imo...

I think Indiana does this trade because they dont have a PF... and they just drafted Brandon Rush to play SG and they obviously have a SF in Granger... This would also give them a ton of capspace next summer with Dun and Murph gone and Wally expiring.... they would be left with:

Ford/Jack
Rush/Daniels
Granger/Williams
Varejao/McRoberts??
Rasho/Foster
