Weird Idea

Post#1 » by eyejayem » Sat Jul 12, 2008 10:51 pm

I know this is going to be a concept that not a lot of teams currently would go for but how much would we have to give Clippers to take one of our big contracts not named Z: Ben, Wally, or combination of expirings? I'm just looking at the rumor of the Clips trying to deal Tim Thomas and 2nd for Zach Randolf. Now this may not be appetizing but a the Knicks end upp with a trade exception over 10mil. They now become players in the remaining free agents. So why would we do it? Because i think there are some pieces people are overlooking to make a significent core and easily make Lebron stay.

There are three players that I would look at right now to be Lebron's robin:
1. Andre Iguodala 24 yrs old
2. Josh Smith 22 yrs old
3. Emeka Okafor 26 yrs old

What if we were able to get that trade exception and make a play for any of those three guys. We would have a trade exception to offer them a contract. They are young enough to grow with Lebron being 23 while most guys in the 2010 free agent class will be a couple years older.

Can you imagine Andre playing the 2 with his defense and offense? Or Josh Smith's blocking ability in Brown's system? I think if it only takes us a 1st rder to do it I'm all for it. Oh and besides the fact we still will have the rest of our expirings and AV to make a deal by the deadline.

Right now, without signing West or Gibson, our payroll for next season is 79 million. Now, assuming it'll take about 12 million to sign one of these guys, if we don't sign Gibson or West (which would be stupid), we'd still have to unload 33 million dollars in salary in order to get under the cap (which is 58.68 million).

Your idea cannot work.

I don't get why any of those were bad signings...

Hughes' injuries are what deteriorated his play...

DJ has been fine all a long...

Marshall was the only miscue...

But Ferry rebounded by trading away Hughes and Marshall and getting nice pieces back, especially Wally's contract..

Hughes--It's not like injuries hadn't already been a concern. A big head combined with big injury concerns...None of us could have known how bad it would turn out, but none of us are paid money to know that. His signing might have had a more crippling effect on the future years than the entire Paxson era.

DJ--
has been fine all a long...
If you consider giving your 11th man and emergency PG 4 mill per fine...

Marshall--Way too long of a deal but I do think Ferry rebounded from this well.

While you can be very kind and give Ferry the benefit of the doubt, the thing that upsets me the most is has lack of luring certain players in here.

He has THE most amazing, talented, coveted player in the NBA (and one who can dish out assist after assist as well), yet he isn't able to convince players to come here and contend for a title with Lebron. I can't help but believe that other GM's would've been able to use Lebron to their advantage much more.

Someone like a Maggette or Posey (or someone their caliber, not even a star, but just a good player) should be persuaded to take 5 million instead of 6 million or 3 years instead of 4 years (just making these up as examples). In addition to that, these caliber players would likely get 1) a starting role 2) more minutes and 3) be a much more important component to our team than they would on almost any other team. That's all purely in addition to playing with Lebron.

I know Ferry still has plenty of time this offseason and before the trade deadline to work things out (and the year after). But this is generally what disappoints me the most thus far with Ferry, and I hope he can end those disappointments soon.

Now I was thinking yeah this is pretty far fetched but right now Clippers only hopes of upgrading the PF position is to trade for ZBO, possibly an injury prone Gerald Wallace, or offer a contract to the lone remaining high profile PF Josh Smith. Now if they take a deal for an expiring they can get another pick and/or player(AV/Pavs) plus be one of the only players if not the only player in the 2009 market and sign a PF out of the few: Boozer, Marion, and Odom.

I dont know but that may be a better option than what they have now.
