CLEVELAND -- The Cavaliers signed guard Daniel Gibson to a five-year contract Wednesday.
Gibson
Gibson's signing is the Cavaliers' first major move of the offseason. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Gibson averaged a career-high 10.4 points per game on 43 percent shooting last season. He sprained his left ankle in a Feb. 20 game at Indiana and missed 18 games.
Gibson had arthroscopic surgery last month on the ankle and is expected to be ready for training camp.
He missed the final two games of Cleveland's playoff series against Boston with a separated shoulder.
One of Cleveland's best shooters, Gibson ranked fifth in the NBA last season in 3-point shooting at 44 percent.

I'm hoping Gibson was given a choice of job security or money and he chose job security with the 5 year deal. Also, this may mean that Gibson is either very loyal to Cleveland, or he believes it's very likely Lebron will be coming back in 2010.
Now let's get West done.

Do you think he got the full MLE?

Ugh, I hope he didn't get the full MLE. I'm thinking maybe 4 million per year with 10% raises. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

I suspect he didn't get any of the MLE. The Cavs should have been able to to use the "Early Bird Rights" Exception for Boobie. The only problem with that (unless I don't fully understand the exception) is that he will be getting like $4.9m in his first year which is more than he's worth in my opinion.
However, I guess in the long run, with the amount of people getting too much money, I'm fine with Gibson getting something like 5 yrs / $28m or something in that ballpark.

I'm hearing its 27.5 over 5 seasons starting salary of 4.5 with 10% increases each season. I would be happy with that if it turns out to be true....

I think I do need a little clarification on the Early Bird Exception. Do you sign the player for the Average NBA Salary in the first year or can it be any amount up to the Average?

So this puts his 2010 cap-number (the year we will have all of the extra cap-space) at 5.45 million. While that isn't bad, I was hoping for something a little smaller. I thought it would have been nice if Cleveland could sign West and Gibson to deals that will amount to $9-10 million by the summer of 2010....that doesn't appear to be likely now, but at least it will be somewhat close.
Gibson is worth it though. I think he has some upside and the fact that he is a deadly outside shooter is a plus. He is a valuable part of this team moving forward.

I don't know if anyone has a source for the 5 years/$27 million, I'm not so sure it's true. I have a link that says it's 5 years/$20.8 million. That means he'd be averaging just over 4 million per season, probably starting out around 3.5 million his first year. Heck of a deal for the Cavs if it's true. It's from a blog on Cleveland.com/The Plain Dealer, so I'm assuming it's pretty reliable:
But in an effort to make sure he's on board for any future successes, Gibson signed a new five-year deal worth $20.8 million with the team Tuesday night.
http://blog.cleveland.com/sports/2008/0 ... _clev.htmlIf this is true, it makes our future salary cap even easier to work with, and should make negotiating with West even better. I can't see West making more than 1-1.5 million more than Gibson per year.

If it's really only 20.8 million, Ferry deserves a big pat on the back.

Gibson was the easy one. Everyone knew he'd sign here and everyone knew it would be cheap. West will be a little bit harder as Im sure he will want starting PG money. What puts the Cavs in the drivers seat though is that we are one of only a couple of teams that can give him a chance to start. I see Delonte signing a deal somewhere around 3 years 15 million or maybe a 4th as a player option, just so he can keep his options open down the road in case he blows up and then can look for his really big contract.

As far as West is concerned, I'm not too worried. I think right not the Cavs are probably offering around 4-4.5 million and West and his agent are probably looking for 6.5-7 million. Really the only team that can afford Delonte and may need a starting PG is Golden State. The only other teams I thought of that may make any sense for Delonte (cuz he's definitely looking to start) would be Denver and perhaps throw in a wild-card of someone like Atlanta or something. Not many teams need a starting PG (or at least Delonte wouldn't be enough of an upgrade for them), not many teams can afford him, and there probably isn't a better fit for Delonte than the Cavs.
I'd guess similar to you B Mac, something like 3 years/$15 million if West's agent believes he'll earn much more after showcasing his skills for a few years starting on the Cavs. Or maybe they'll get a more long-term deal done for up to 4 years/$22 million with a 5th year option.

But i think West will be looking at 4/22mil like hydro stated, the being a player option and the fourth a team option. That's because if he performs well these next 2 seasons, he can win big in 2010. If he doesn't perform next two seasons, he will take the player option on the 3rd and play it out. If he still doesnt do good, we use our option and let him walk.. Win- Win for both.
