Scouting Report on Delonte West

Hello Cavs fans-
Wondering if you could give me your thoughts on Delonte West. I'm specifically looking for more information on his passing, defense, impression of his PG instincts, quickness, and soforth. I have watched him play on limited occasions throughout the years but wanted more feedback from those who have seen him for numerous games.

No takers willing to talk a little more about Delonte's game?

It'd be useless to give you a scouting report when Milwaukee won't be getting him.
Delonte is a deal breaker (in the Mo Williams deal) in any circumstance and the only way the Cavs trade him is if they get some nice pieces back.
I'm not sharing my opinion but rather sharing the facts.
(Well, according to W&G)

I believe Delonte has only played 26 games for the Cavs so in all fairness it is difficult to give an in depth scouting report. I will say he was thrown in as the starting PG and was probably the Cavs' 2nd best clutch player in the playoffs after LeBron. He's a pretty good defender and can guard both backcourt positions even though a quick PG like Rondo gave him a little trouble. His assist/TO ratio wasn't great in in the playoffs especially against Boston but I think some of that can be chalked up to lack of playoff experience and new teammates. He can really shoot the 3 pointer. When it comes to PG instincts, quickness, etc I would compare him to Hinrich and is definitely more of a combo guard than a pure PG. I'm probably higher on West than most here but Delonte is 2 years younger than Hinrich and I believe also has more potential than Hinrich at this point. I'm not sure Delonte is a guy you want as your primary ballhandler but he works really well playing off LeBron.
EDIT: I don't think Delonte is going to Milwuakee either. Just my limited observations of West's play last season.

Delonte is a deal breaker in a deal to get Mo? Whyyyyyyyyy lol, wouldnt we be getting Mo to replace him, and Mo is an obivious upgrade.
What exactly did W&G say? And does this thing still have legs???

W&G didn't say Delonte was a deal breaker at all (at least that I know of), but he did say that Delonte wasn't really involved much in the discussions. Sounds like the Smith, Sasha, and Damon are pretty much the guys who may be involved.
As far as Mo vs. Delonte...Mo is an upgrade offensively. He can definitely score more easily than Delonte, as is obvious by his torching of the Cavs in the past. However, Delonte is taller and a much better defender, plus he isn't too bad offensively either. Neither are ideal guards to run an offense. I wouldn't say Mo is the clear upgrade, although hey may be better, especially for the present time.

Yea i read w&gs post so it cleared it up for me...
But i do think some people overrate dwests defense a little, the funny thing is that some of delontes worst games defensivey came against mo williams. He gave up 37/6 to him one game and 29/13 another, both were losses for the cavs....

Delonte West is a solid backup combo guard. I would like him in that role at the right salary, but as a starting PG he's not very good.
His PG instincts are not good. He has a lot of work to do in that aspect. He can push the ball in the open court well, but that's about where his PG instincts end. In the half court he can't advance the ball under pressure, can't efficiently get a team into their sets, he's not a guy who can create for his teammates. His number one problem though is ball handling. If there's any type of pressure on the ball he just doesn't have enough handles to break it as he should. He's not good at coming off picks either.
If Milwaukee were to acquire Delonte West and start him at point guard they would be in serious trouble IMO. Delonte can't create for others, he can't initiate an offense. Looking at the Bucks roster I don't know who would. If Magic Sessions is the real deal and Delonte were to come off the bench or play alongside him, that type of situation has would have great potential for the Bucks.
Defensively he's overrated by some. I get the impression some people think he's a great defender, one of the better defensive guards in the NBA when he simply is not. What I like about him though is he will give 100% effort. Without looking at the stats he plays solid defense without fouling and he tries to make the guy in front of him work. He has long reach and will get his hands on balls for steals and even get some blocks.
He's obviously a defensive upgrade over Mo, but I'm not sure if he would be the incredible upgrade some might think.

I thought he did an adequate job advancing the ball under pressure. He had a habit of passing the ball to bigs as they slashed to the basket which with the Cavs is a bad thing. I'm convinced that that caused half of his turnovers. He did a pretty good job penetrating as well although he's not a great penetrator and only a decent finisher inside. After he'd played a while I thought he did a much better job than just about any pg that the Cavs have had since LeBron came to the team. I do think he'll be helped by being able to play along with these guys a bit more.

Delonte West was awful with the Cavs and has been his whole career at advancing the ball under pressure. He's just not a very good ball handler. It's probably the #1 area of improvement he needs to make in his game.

I wouldn't do it. Blount and Banks would never get on the floor, and I think the Cavs would be able to acquire Haslem in a straight up sign and trade involving West.
