Hm, I had to reread the quote

“This is the first time since I was offered a scholarship at St. Joes that I feel like I am valued as a person and a player. Dan Gilbert and the Cavaliers have shown me that they value me as a person and a player and that was the most important thing to me,” said West. “In that sense, this was not about a specific dollar amount. You can’t really put a dollar value on a person, their skills you can, but not their heart and what kind of person they are. My family is blessed and I feel a great relief to be able to concentrate on basketball now.”

I'd say 3 years 11M now

Well, it's about to that they came to a compromise for a new contract Delonte.

The following is a news link from the ABJ's Brian Windhorst:

After a summer of intense negotiations, the team came to terms with restricted free agent guard Delonte West today.

West has agreed to a two-year contract with a team option for the 2011-12 season. According to league sources, the deal is worth between $4 million and $5 million per season.

I think Windhorst screwed up with the 11-12 option. a two year deal would make that a 10-11 option... meaning we have kept our 2010 capspace.

Great deal for West if it is 4 million. I actually thought we were going to let him walk but it's great that they finally compromised a deal.

i am very happy with this move! i like west as a player and hes coming into his own in this leage we are finally set at pg compared to past hears imo. williams, west, gibson with either of them being able to slide over to the 2. it looks like the cavs are trying to put talent around lebron and so far they are doing a good job.

I would like to see how close it is to what we thought..

I know they said that they would not pay Delonte more than Boobie but the potential of Delonte is far more than that of Mr.Gibson.

I actually disagree with that. I think that Gibson potential far outshines that of Delonte. But, Delonte is more versatile. I'm not sure that Gibson will ever be as good as I think however. But anyone that is as quick as he is and can hit a jump shot from anywhere on the floor is a danger to put up big points. The problem is that Gibson can't handle and he's not aggressive enough on offense.

I am assuming that Brown is ready to play two small guards at one time or we are wasting time. I think that we should press the court since we have interchangeable parts and post LeBron early in the game with the shooters out there. I also think we need to lose pavs or Wally in a package for a big man.

Seems like a solid deal for both sides. Good work by the Cleveland management.

Stein reported that a source told him it was 3 yrs for 12.5m and the 3rd yr was a team option. And supposedly Mike Brown actually stepped in to get this deal done because he said he needed West on this team.....

Delonte West would be a great combo guard off the bench for any team in the NBA. We're not acting like he's a star, but hell yes we're happy with a 3 year, 12.5 million dollar contract (esp. with the 3rd year being a team option, still giving us amazing capspace for 2010). West/Gibson is about as good as a bench guard combo in the league. Mo is a very nice point guard. For once, the Cavs guards are looking great. Lebron + Wally or Sasha or Kinsey (whoever ends up being the backup 3) also makes for a very, very nice rotation at the 3 spot. Our bigs are not ideal yet, but Z, Andy, Ben, and JJ will all contribute, and Wright and Jackson will be there for depth purposes.

We also STILL have all of our major trade assets (Wally and then 1 or 2 of Andy, Sasha, West, a pick) for a very nice upgrade at PF or SG (whichever we'll need more/we'll have the best options with.

Compare this team with our title team:

Z / Andy / Dwayne
Gooden / Marshall
James / Newble
Sasha / Gibson (rookie year)
Hughes (injured) / Snow / Damon

to

Z / Andy / Wright
Wallace / Hickson / Jackson
James / Wally
Sasha / West / Kinsey
Mo / Gibson

Mo, Gibson > Hughes, Snow, Jones
Sasha, West, Kinsey > Sasha, Gibson
James, Wally > James, Newble
Drew, Marshall = Wallace, Hickson, Jackson (Drew's got better offensive production, but Ben's got better D and I'd rather have 2 young bigs than a washed up Marshall)
Z, Andy, Wright >/= Z, Andy, Dwayne

*edit* two more things...

1) You say we go through scrubs. The Cavs have one of the best defenses in the league, they're one of the best rebounding teams in the league, and they have many shooters in Gibson, Wally, Mo, West, and Z. Add in another PF or SG starter at some point this season hopefully, and that doesn't sound like a team of scrubs built around Lebron to me.

2) And you also suggest burning future #1s? That's why the Cavs were in such a mess ever since they drafted Lebron. Our former GM was an idiot and traded away all of our future picks and assets away, leaving us with very little options to improve our team. You don't "burn through" #1s, you make smart draft picks or use them for major trades in which you're making major upgrades at certain positions.

West was the second best player on this team last year in the playoffs.

I'm glad we signed West. He's an old school basketball player that knows how to play the game.
