Can the Cavs win 60 games?

Post#1 » by Baseline Runner » Sat Nov 15, 2008 4:30 pm

The Cavs have never crossed that milestone in their history, could this be the year? At the beginning of the season I posted that the Cavs might win 60 and a Cavs fan said that would be as possible Lebron averaging 40/10/10. Cavs fan are not the most optimistic fans across the league. :D

Right now we have one of the top 3 offenses and top 3 defenses in the league. I think we completely outclass all but 4 or 5 other teams in the league. Even that Celtics game on the road we almost won with Lebron and Mo playing terrible and our bench scrubs like Wright getting major minutes.

We aren't likely to win 60, I just don't think that is a priority for Brown or the team. What they are always going to want is to get a decent seeding and to be as healthy and rested as possible when going to the playoffs. That means that Lebron might once again miss 7 games because of something relatively minor and he very well might be seated for the last games of the season as well. Sure 60 is nice but being ready for the playoffs is nicer.

Mike Brown won't sit guys at the end of the season to miss games, he will cut their minutes though if they have a spot locked. He comes from a Pacers playoff team and Spurs playoff team that knew how important momentum is at the end of the season to carry over into the playoffs.

With that said they finally have a chance to win those games even if Lebron sits with Mo and Z playing the way they are playing now. Hickson will then(if he is on the team still)have a chance to pull a Boobie a prove himself worthy of minutes in the playoffs by playing more at the end of the season.

60 wins possible. I would just like to be 1st in the east. lock up homecourt. That is more important. The offense more efficient I like. The defense is good but I dont quite think it is Mike Brown enough.

While I think this team is the best Ive seen in years.....I dont think 60 is in our sights. Nor do I think it matters if we win 60. I think our biggest concern is bringing in one more piece to this puzzle. I dont know what it is....but I dont think this team is complete yet. And id rather add this piece sooner rather than later....hint hint D. Ferry. While I initially thought that we desperately a 2 guard....im actually liking the D West/Gibson rotation (AS LONG AS GIB STAYS CONSISTENT!!!) So maybe its in the form of a Power Forward??

I'm still not convinced we can win 60 games, only very special teams can get 60 wins in this league. We didn't even play many strong teams yet, one might say we played two and got two L's. Remember, in 05/06 we started season with 9-2 record and barely finished with 50 W's. Of course, this team is much more talented but we can say it about a lot of other teams, too. I like our chances at 52-55 wins...Impossible is nothing though.

If we can win 55+, then I would be more than happy with our ball club. Just as long as we get homecourt advantage in the playoffs and win the central with at least hte second seed. Although, it isn't impossible to win 60, it isn't very likely at least not yet. We need to go further into the season first.

I predicted 58+ before the season started (staying relatively healthy), I've seen nothing to suggest I should lower that estimate.

As for the season thus far, we came out of the gate slow (a side effect of perhaps taking it overly easy in preseason), we haven't really played a complete game (the 2nd half against Denver was the closest), our defense has only been there in spurts, yet we're 7-2 and ranked #2 or #3 by computer power rankings.

We lost to two elite teams on the road, let's see what happens when they come here to play. And in the case of Boston, lets see what happens when we go there to play again. As for the rest of the games, it's easy to look at what those teams did last year and say they are bad teams, but look at what they're doing this year. Their records excluding their losses to us

Charlotte 3-4
Dallas 2-6
Chicago 4-3
Indy 4-3 (including a win over boston)
Chicago 4-3
Bucks 5-4
Denver 5-3 (including a win at boston)

combined 27-26 or better than average. And who would have thought going in that Dallas would be the team dragging that down.

This next week or so will say a lot about where we end up record wise.

Utah
@New Jersey
@Detroit (back to back)
vs Atlanta
@ Knicks

can we go 4-1 in that stretch - win our home game and take 2 of the 3 on the road?

I'm gonna say no - unless we make another move as Niko said. I like our team, but we still need at least one more big who can score unless Hickson really starts coming along in the next few weeks.

The early results are pretty encouraging though. Mo will only get better as he gets more comfortable playing with LBJ, and guys like Darnell Jackson & Hickson should get better as the year goes on as well.

So IMO the current squad should be able to get 52-55 wins with good health, but if Wally or Snow's contract can be moved for another piece I think 60 is def a possibility.

Dallas almost won 70 games a couple of years agol are we that inferior to that team that we can't pull 60? As long as we keep beating up on the mediocre teams throughout the league we'll have a good chance of winning 60.

This team is that special in my opinion: the best player in the league and a rare combination of great defense and offense.

I agree with baseline that 55 is in our sights, and I really think 60 is doable if we stay very healthy. The reason is that we are pulling away from teams late in the games that in the past we would let stay in the games. Mo, and Delonte are the biggest difference though you cant discount Big Ben's defense.
I really dont miss Drew missing 2 or 3 defensive rotations at crucial times late in the games. And the biggest thing is, while Lebron has had to score big lately, I dont believe he has had to work anywhere near as hard to get those points as he has had in the past. With Mo sharing the duties of creating and bringing the ball up the court it has in given Lebron the opportunity to score his points against single or double teams rather than trying to beat a double team above the three point line and then having to beat whoever rotates to him behind the inital double team.
I think that the acquisition of Mo on this team may have had something to do with Detroit trading for AI in that we have proved that we could shut them down the last two years, and with Mo here we improved our offense, which imo put us on the next step above where both teams were last year.
Not to mention they were getting older in their starting lineup, and had little cap flexibility before the move. anyway, I have been pumped since we acquired Mo, and am liking what I have seen so far, much better than the Hughes experiment.

8-2 in the first 10, what can we expect out of the next 10

@ New Jersey
@ Detroit (back to back)
vs Atlanta
@ Knicks
vs Thunder (back to back)
vs Golden State
@ Milwaukee (back to back)
vs Knicks
Indy
@ Bobcats (back to back)

4 back to backs in 10 games vs just 1 the first 10, 5 home and 5 road games vs 6 home and 4 road games in the first 10. 7-3 keeps us on track for 60+ wins with about 1/4 of the season completed.

These games are easy. We should at least win 7 of them.

60 is a stretch. Imma have to say no...55 + maybe, but 60?! If the Cavs win 60 games that MVP trophy is as good as LeBron's.

That schedule looks pretty easy. I think we lose one Detroit game then one random game against someone else. So we should go either 9-1 or 8-2.

My thoughts exactly. I don't really care what the number is as long as it's one more than Detroit or any other Central team. If it's more than all but one other team (BOS) in th East, I'm happier.

I settled on 56 before the season as the target to win the Central and the #2 seed and I still like that number.

I really like that the Cavs are padding the win column early this year, nice refreshing change. Now if we can avoid the 2-8 stretch right after Christmas...

why settle for the #2 seed? I want the #1 seed. I want Detroit and Boston playing each other in the conference semi-finals. And I want game 7 in cleveland in the conference finals.

This team can and will win 60 games. We are just very deep. Three losses are all on the road in tough places to play. We will win our fair share of those and then wait till those teams come here.

The other thing is this team is still figuring things out (we have just 3 players from start of last year). By the time the All Star break rolls around, we will really see them gel as a team. This is one reason why I don't want to trade Wally. This would mean we have to integrate another player into the mix. Don't like that idea.

55 is the target I'm hoping for. I think that is the win total needed to get LeBron the MVP award that he has been robbed of for the past two seasons. 55 wins will also get them the #2 seed in the East.
