A Look to the Future (I know.. let's focus on this Season)

Post#1 » by bcortell » Wed Dec 10, 2008 3:29 am

While this season is going on, it makes me think about how we can continue our high level of play (or get better) without sacrificing 2010 capspace.. After this season, Wally expires, AV has an opt out, Sasha's contract is not guaranteed next year, etc.. So here would be my plan.. feel free to disagree or put what your plan would be.

First, I want to say I'm not all about the hype of another superstar FA coming, but I would like to keep that option open. At the very least, there will be some very nice second tier guys to sign..

This year:
1. Try to get Joe Smith to sign with us if he is bought out.
2. If we can't get an upgrade at SG with Wally's contract (I don't see Vince, Howard, Miller, or Richardson available and I'm not for having Redd here).. let him expire.
3. Once AV opts out, sign him to a 4 (or 5) year deal where he makes something like 7 mil, 6.5 mil, 7.5 mi, 8 mil. Hopefully that will be plenty for him.
4. (You may hate me for this) Pick up Sasha's option for next year. My thinking is this- he can replace the minutes Wally looses and if we let him go and wally expire, we would need to sign another wing player. With that said, there's not going to be any that only want a one year deal so we would really have a chunk of our 2010 cap space taken up by whoever we signed.
5. Keep our draft picks and pick a SG with one and a Center with the other, i.e. let's say Cole Aldrich (Center from Texas) with our 1st and Terrence Williams (SG from Louisville) with Chicago's 2nd.

Next year we have:

Mo/Boobie
West/ Sasha/Williams
Lebron/Sasha/Williams
Ben/ JJ/Jackson
Z/AV/ Aldrich

1. On the books will be Lebron's cap hold ~20 mil, Mo 9.3 mil, AV 6.5 mil, Boobie 4.015 mil, JJ 1.528 mil, Darnell .854 mil, Aldrich ~1.0 mil, Wiliams ~.750 mil. We also have a TO on Delonte, who would be owed 3.85 mil (let's assume we pick that up)
2. Re-sign Lebron. (If he wants to come back.)
2. I'm going to assume the salary cap is 62 mil. We'll have 47.797 already on the books. That gives us 14.203 mil to offer to Bosh or Amare.
3. If that isn't enough for them, (again you may hate me for saying this) we could renounce the rights to West. That'll give us 18.053 to offer to Bosh or Amare- which I think is a competitive offer.
4. Draft fillers or best available.

Mo/Boobie
Williams?/Boobie/ 2010 draftee
Lebron/ 2010 draftee
Bosh/JJ/ Darnell
AV/Aldrich

Conlusion: It might be risky to renounce West's rights in 2010 but if we could get assurance that Bosh/Amare would sign with us I'd do it. Mo/Bron/Bosh/AV would be a great foundation. We would still have our draft picks, and I've been pleased with who Ferry has picked thus far so hopefully that will continue. If we don't get a big in 2010, I think Joe Johnson would be a good target and JJ can then step in at PF. I know there are a lot of unknowns to my plan (i.e. when guys will declare for the draft, who Ferry actually picks, AV's contract, etc) but I think all of what I have said is realistic.

What are your thoughts?

Winning the championship maybe a reality now.
But I think the more the Cavs win, the more they will be afraid to lose LBJ.

Yes I am well aware of our chances to win a championship. It doesn't change anything of what I said. I didn't even mention trying to win a championship- only things that I think would improve our team and set us up for the best possible outcome now and in the future.
