What position(s) and whom are we looking at in the draft?

Post#1 » by eyejayem » Sun Mar 22, 2009 9:32 am

With March Madness underway and the last chance to look at players in play, who are we looking at?

Are we going best available player or are we targeting certain people?

I would like to get a C who may actually be able to contribute but chances of that are slim. We also need a wing who can back up Lebron and Delonte. And possibly a PG off the bench.

I would love to buy a pick in the late teens to early 20s then I would try this:

20s: Jerome Jordan

Our pick 29th or 30: Whichever PG falls- Flynn, Collison, or (if they both go) AJ Price or Jodie Meeks

Mia pick: Danny Green (fits in perfect with his defense and 3pt range and ability to play both wing positions)

Thats is my draft right there. Let me know what we should be going after and whom.

Why would we go for a PG? You may not like him, but Boobie is our backup PG. We have more pressing needs than PG in the draft.

We need one of three things: a big center to compliment Hickson, a combo forward and a SG that is Delonte-lite. It all depends on who leaves via free agency, what trade possibilities come up and who we sign.

I love Delonte, but if we could somehow get lucky and land a more prototypical SG that late in the draft that would be perfect. Find someone that can score in bunches but also has the tools to be stout defensively in a few seasons. Of course the center of the future would also be nice to find, but its highly unlikely we find either position with those late of picks. Thats why it might make sense to just go best player available to stockpile on talent. If the player is blocked by a couple guys in front of him so be it... we can always trade talent, and I think we've got some big trade targets on our list for this summer and next season.

^^That is a lot to ask for, especially with more wing players at this time. But yet, we are more likely to have a very late first rounder. Big men nowadays either have the defense or offense, but hardly ever both.

People are saying we need a 7 footer. Has anyone looked at Jerome Jordan a natural 7-footer. He has a year to lear a lil from Z and Ben while growing with Hickson and Varajao(if he stays).

As far as a wing, if we think about the late 1st, I like Sam Young of Pitt. His tools are perfect. He around 20 pts by the 1st half of todays game. 6'6 and 210. But solid. But that is also why I like Danny Green in the 2nd rd because I think he is highly underrated. 6'6 210 w/ a 6'10 wingspan. Outstanding defense with ~1.3 blks a game and shoots around 43% from 3. Either one of these guys I would take and can get in the roatation by midseason.

As far as Boobie being a PG, he is ok. But honestly he is out there for his shooting, not his playmaking. The three guys I listed would allow Boobie to excel and get back to his game from last year which was playing offball. I think if we try and get Price in the 2nd rd if people dont think it is worth trying to get a PG early then I would take him and let him get back to his Junior year level. He has been hurt this year since his knee injuries late last season but his play hasnt hurt them because they are still #1. Once his explosiveness returns he will make a team happy but if he was fully healthy this season he would have gone in the 1st rd.

We need some athleticism and toughness up front and a shot blocking presence... I know JJ is viewed highly, but his basketball IQ just doesn't measure up right now obviously.. But my main concern with him is his stone hands... I like Darnell, but he's not a shot blocker..He will be valuable down the road though..

I'd like to find a guy that can play around the rim, block shots, and finish strong around the rim...

Also, this team desperately needs another slasher... We need another guy that can dribble penetrate within this offense...

Where are BJ Mullens and Chase Budinger expected to go?

I know Budinger was being considered for our pick last year, and I still like the idea.

Some mock drafts have them both seesawing between the end of the lottery to the late teens. If we bought a late pick I would consider but I don't see either becoming a force in the laegue.

Mullins probably has the better chance. A lot of people are saying that Ohio's system isnt good for his game but he still gets silly fouls and people question his passion and basketball IQ. He is still a great finisher but you cant finish when you are on the bench.

Chase I like. but his defense is subpar and I dont know how well that would go if he has to play SG. I think we can find a better wing later since this draft is wing heavy.

trade our picks for money and sign people. There is not going to be anyone available who is going to be the future of anything. We may pick up a nice seventh or either guy somewhere but nothing huge. Either we have to trade back into the lottery or just go with free agency to build the future of this team. There are a lot of talented big men who we can trade for or sign and develop who fit in better. Look at Robin Lopez. Drafted by the suns as a late lottery. He is a true 7 footer (which is what you all think we need) and is no where near the skill of his brother and not even all that good. And he was a LOTTERY pick. So what makes any of you guys think we can get that with a 29 or 30 pick? I think we need to let wally go, i love him but he is done with us. And Snow and wright will be gone and maybe even Kinsey. Thats a lot of money plus money for picks maybe, so sign Ben Gordon or Shawn Marion for back up SG/SF, and for down low we have a lot of options like Boozer, Okur, or David Lee. I like Boozer and Okur because I know Utah will prolly only be able to afford one or the other so I think we can offer more and David Lee is a stud. Then we take what money we have left for LeBron in 2010 and one more guy and we are set.

I think we need a center. IMO, last year instead of Hickson, we probably should have picked up DeAndre Jordan. He is a young talented guy that could turn into a Dwight Howard/20ppg 10rpg stud.

I like Hickson and all but Center is where we need to most help (due to Z's age and injury history).

PF-Josh Heytvelt. I love the range he has and the tenacity he plays the game with. He is surprisingly athletic and I think he would be available. Heytvelt would fit well with the Cavs being able to knock down the outside jumper.

PF-Tyler Hansbrough-You cannot deny his accomplishments. I think he would be a great change of pace player off the bench. He is a work-a-holic and will continue to improve. I could see him being a dynamic defender who contributes between 8-10 points on offense

PF-Taj Gibson-I like Gibson's size and length. Maybe not as athletic, but may develop into a solid contributor. I thought he had a good late season run. MIght surprise some people.

PF/C-AJ Ogilvy-I really don't know anything about him. He's a player I've seen listed around where we pick, but I have not seen him play.

SG/SF-Tyreke Evans-He is a little bit of a project, but if he comes out I think he would be a nice compliment to Lebron James. He is definitely a scorer and would add some athleticism. Evans may not fall to the Cavs, but they should consider him if he drops.

SF-James Johnson-Rangy defender and an OK scorer. I think he could help the Cavs on the defensive end, but I am unsure whether he will be around when the Cavs pick

PF-Patrick Patterson-Love the toughness. Brings it defensively almost every night. I think he could contribute next year. He doesn't have the range to consistently hit the outside shot. He is only a Cav if he drops.

C-BJ MUllens-Based on his skill set, Mullens has no business being drafted in the NBA. He is not ready to contribute next year. If the Cavs are willing to wait a year or two Mullens could pay dividends. Mullens will have to improve his strength and conditioning. He struggled to stay on the floor in college. NBA scouts will overrate Mullens and pick him early. The Cavs will have to trade down to get him because someone will take a chance. If he drops as a late first round pick he is worth the chance.

2nd Round Pick:
SG/SF-Danny Green-A solid shooter who could provide good minutes as a backup. I don't see Green developing into a starter, but is the type that could provide a lift off the bench. In the 2nd round you don't expect much anyways.

SF/PF-Robert Dozier-He will probably have to fall a little bit for the Cavs to have a shot. I love his athleticism and effort. He is always around the ball. Dozier doesn't possess a lot of offensive tools, but would be a solid defender and shore up our rebounding struggles

PG-Cedric Jackson-A hometown pick, but would be a great fit for the Cavs. He needs to become more consistent knocking down his shots, but I love his ability to get into the lane and finish around the basket. Defensively, Jackson is has very active hands and is a nuisance for any offensive player. With work he could really become a lock down defender in the NBA. He proved in the tournament he can play at a high level against good competition. Jackson reminds me of a poor mans Gary Payton. The Cavs should even make a trade to move up in the 2nd round to scoop up Jackson.

Tyler Hansborought wouldn't be bad. I think he is being underrated. I think he can be for us what leon powe is for the celts. They remind a ton of each other. Undersized Pfs that have solid fundamentals, rebound very well, and draw lots of fouls.

i wouldnt mind hansbrough one bit. especially if he is available when we pick him. we need to get younger up front and jj and hansbrough could be a nice start. however we need to find a replacement for big Z pretty soon.

I think that Terrence Williams and Sam Young will sneak up and is well deserved but most mock drafts have them still going in the late 1st to early 2nd.

I think if Jerome Jordan a legit 7 footer falls like Deandre Jordan last year did to the LA Clippers I would take him in a heartbeat. Jerome looks further along then Deandre did last year and Deandre has already shown promise this year with a couple double double games.

But the other thing is there are likely to be a lot of picks for sale and a lot more big draft day deals so you never know.

What about Steph Curry? Lebron seems to be buddy buddy with him, perhaps we could grab him in the draft, provided that his stock has fallen because of his early out in the NIT and trade away Boobie and some other people for a center?
