LeBron James to be named NBA Most Valuable Player today
by Brian Windhorst/Plain Dealer Reporter
Monday May 04, 2009, 9:14 AM

CLEVELAND -- According to a league source, LeBron James will be named the NBA Most Valuable Player this afternoon.

James has chosen to have the announcement at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron. All his Cavs teammates are expected to be there as well as representatives from Kia, which will give him a new car as part of the honor.

He will be the first Cav to win the honor in history and the second youngest ever to win the award behind Wes Unseld in 1969. James averaged 28.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 7.6 assists this season, his sixth in the NBA.

Two weeks ago James finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting and an upgrade in that area this season plus the Cavs franchise-record 66 wins were compeling to the 123 media voters. The award will be officially announced later today and he will be honored before the Cavs play the Hawks in Game 1 on the Eastern Conference Semifinals on Tuesday. Traditionally, NBA Commissioner David Stern is on hand to present the Maurice Podoloff Trophy in front the fans.

Congrats - one of many to come for King James.

Hopefully he can add on to the trophy chest this summer with a Finals MVP.

Of all the places in the world he could have picked to have his ceremony, LBJ chose to have it in the gym of his St. Vincent St. Mary high school. The whole Cavs team looks like they're in attendance.

But don't forget...LBJ hates Cleveland and can't wait to leave!

This is impossible for all the short-sighted NY writers to spin into an LBJ-to-NYC angle, but they're sure as hell going to try...

Portland hater, using any chance he can get to leave a nasty comment about the LAL. Portland has a deep young nice team, they are going to be in the hunt every year. If Portland fan spent as much focus on rooting for their team that they did hating on the LAL there probably would be better off. At least their mental health would be a lot better off.

Kobe is still the best player in the game IMO. If you watched both the CLE V LAL games and watched KB24 effectiveness on LBJ, and watch KB24 finish game after game throughout the season you'd know that.

Lebron is an excellent player and a stat sheet stuffer like no other. He's the best athlete I've ever witnessed, he deserves the MVP especially for carrying the Cavs like he has.

However IMO KB24 is still the best closer in the game, and is the smartest player on the floor every night, he does everything well.

However, as far as the MVP award I've never seen an award given out and the recipient team always has a battle or loses. If CLE is going to lose a game this series I can see it being the game he gets the MVP trophy. In fact I'll call it right now ATL will take that game or at least cover.

Congrats to CLE fan for LBJ's MVP, the LAL are taking home the trophy that requires no popular vote.
